Subject: bad cam- will it idle?

Message:
Does anyone know if the stock computer on a 99 318 will idle with a cam with 110 lobe separation? I have a hypertech programmer, but don't think it's gonna help.

Good point Todd, I always pull it entirely out after the distributor so I can concentrate on the cam install and worry about the oil drive later...plus I put a HD chrome moly drive in anyways.

Depends on ultimately on the overlap. I am running a custom ground comp cams with 109LSA and 43 degrees of overlap in a 2001 R/T. I have a slight lope at idle which results in misfire codes if I idle in traffic for any length of time. To solve this problem, I increased the plug gap to .050 which helped but didn't eliminate the problem. An MSD would probably clean it up at idle.

The second problem is that vacuum at idle is down to 14" versus 18" stock. With this drop, the PCM thinks the engine is under load and dumps more fuel resulting in a rich idle and cooked cat.

After a couple thousand miles of driving and numerous PCM resets, I no longer get the fuel system too rich code, but the misfire code returns within a few days.

If you are going to add any sort of cam, I would highly recommend researching the PCM options before selecting the cam.

KRC has a custom flash tailored to their cam offerings. There is rumored to be a custom flash utility available soon, but that rumor is nearly a year old now.

I would talk to KRC Performance, The Fast Man, and socaldakota to get their cam recommendations but don't let them off the phone until you have a PCM solution that is tailored specifically to your cam profile and ideally to your head, intake, and exhaust modifications too.

badDAK, I installed a Crane compu-cam with high lift and lobe seperation, and I used the Mopar performance computer and it straitened out perferctly. I am also running 1.7 ff roller rockers, Flow-tech Headers, cromoly push rods, oversize valves, mild head and intake work, throtle body spacer, 18# injecters, K&N air filter, and dual flowmasters w/out cats. With 32x11.5x15 Bridgestone MT's It will light them up till it hits second gear (auto trans) on a ext. cab 4x4.
