Subject: New dak order Q's IP: Logged
Message: Hi guys, been looking through the site and have come to a few conclusions thus far...the Dakota brakes are poor and the rated towing capacity of 6050lbs for a 2wd QC is a Dodge dream if there are hills involved. I plan on ordering the 4.7 and 5? speed automatic, towing package & heavy duty service package, plus some bells and whistles...
Here's my question: Are there any options that are a waste of time, some you wish you had ordered etc... and please confirm that this drive-train combination is only gonna yield 17-19mpg on a good day, down hill?
Thanks for all replies,
Jim

Message: There are a few options that I have now that I could not do without.
1. Lights in the vanity mirrors. Electrical Group Upgrade? Not sure what option this is.
2. 3.92 LIMITED SLIP rear end. Try to get the 9.25" but thats no biggie. But you MUST get LIMITED SLIP... MUST
3. Tow package
4. Heavy duty engine cooling
I HIGHLY recommend these four options. For the engine/drivetrain combo 17-19 mpg sounds about right, but I drive a 5.9 so Im not too sure. Yes, the brakes are terrible. One more option that has come in handy more than you'd think is the overhead console with multi function display. VERY handy. Enjoy your truck!!

Message: I have the limited slip, tow package, heavy duty service group too. Great setup. I've done some serious towing thru from the California mountains all the way to the Florida beaches along I-10 in the nastiest summer time heat, with no problems at all.
Brakes do suk. You'll need rotors in no time. Get good ones, not Dodge replacements. This is something I would do before yours go bad. Then just sell the old ones while they are still good.
I ordered my truck, and opted NOT to get the power windows and doors, as I've had problems with those in the past, and figure less to go wrong in the future. Especially for my stress level :-) I can roll up the windows with my arm and can use the exercise to boot!
I would however like to have the overhead console computer, but I don't remember if you can get that without all the other power options?
I got the fog lights too. Nice to have but the lenses crack easy.
I try not to think about the gas milage I get, cause it makes me cry.
Good luck.

Message: Thanks for the replies here guys...one more Q: Mostly highway driving, yet planned future towing applications with this truck...3.55's or 3.92's?
Thanks,

Message: I have a 2003 4x4 QC 4.7L 5spd manual w/3.55s and limited slip.
Most of my driving is city/highway mix and at least once a month I tow a 24' 3450lbs. travel trailer over the hills of PA without a problem.
3.92s are your best bet if you are doing primarily towing, but I would say stick with the 3.55s if you are only towing about 10-20% of your time.

Message: While I didn't buy my truck new, it does have the overhead consle and is alot handier than you might think, I use it alot. I love the power mirrors, and keyless entry, but that might be standard by now mines a 1999. With the crappy mileage the 22gallon tank is nice.
