Subject: 4wd v. 2wd IP: Logged
Message: Just curious as to how much difference performance wise there would be between a 4wd 4.7L cc dakota and one with 2wd in say take off and 1/4th mile.
Thanks

Message: The biggest difference to me is that the 4wd is much easier to launch without spin, and yes the drivetrains were the same, both cc, both 4.7 5 speed 3.92's and limited slip... but the tires on the 4wd hook much better than those on the 2wd... at least that is my experience.. in the quarter i would say a couple (2-3) tenths with identically qualified drivers...

Message: Ah so not too bad, and not nearly as bad as I thought.
Damn it, just cant think if I need the 4x4 or not, or I would just go rt if I didn't want it.
But I like the 4x4 stance

Message: A 4X4 will be slower, there is a whole other set of axels and a second drive shaft, not to mention everything in the transfer case, that must be turned in order to make the front wheels have power. Also if your only in two wheel drive there is still the weight difference between a 4X4 and a 2 wheel drive vehicle. If the trucks are completely equal except for the fact one is 4X4 and the other 2 wheel drive the 2 wheel drive should always be faster.

Message: Exactly, there is more drag on a 4x4. Test it and see. Coast your truck from a given speed in 4x4 and then in 2x4(disengaged), you slow down way faster in 4x.
