Subject: Truck starts but won't stay running...?? IP: Logged
Message: Hey Guys,
Any ideas here. Went out to my truck this morning and it starts and turns over just fine. But the only way to keep it running is if I give it gas. As soon as I let off the gas it dies.
Any ideas on what the problem could be?
thanks.... Bill

Message: Most likely your fuel/air mixture is too lean. So I'd check all the sensors that attach to your TB, and your fuel lines/injectors.
Do you get a check engine light? If there is an injector problem or a sensor isn't returning anything it should give you one.

Message: Sounds like it may be the idle air control motor-on the throttle body. You can remove it either with a #15 or #20 torx ( sorry, I can't remember which ). Unplug it and push the pintle ( tapered end) gently back into the body of the motor. Now, as a test, you can reinstall it and leave it unplugged. The truck should start and idle quite fast ( like 1500 rpm maybe ). If this makes you nervous, plug the harness back in before starting the truck- it should start at a high idle and gradually drop back to normal. If this works, go buy a new IAC...they ain't cheap anymore!

Message: before you go to the truble and check open the hood then there is a fuse box. i dont remember whic on it is but one relay is for the fuel pump. all the fuses in there are the same so switch it with a different one. see if that takes care of the problem. I had the same problem in my 96. it runs when i give it gas or drive but when i stop at a light or when its ideling it seems like is running outta gas. it might be the same thing. good luck. if it is the relay is bad you can get then for round 3 to 7 dollars. some places will try to sell them for 50 bucks just because it is for the fuel pump but they are all the same. thats just the way it was on my truck.

Message: If the problem occurs when the engine is cold or it is below 50-55 degrees and goes away after it fully warms up, it could be the crankshaft position sensor.

Message: I agree with midnightdak.
I had the exact same problem and replaced the battery today.
But,....
Remember to reset the computer. If after installing the battery the problem continues LIKE MINE DID,... disconnect the negative battery cable, turn and hold the ignition key forward in the start position for 15-20 seconds, and then turn the key back. Then reattach the negative cable and the vehicle will start up and run great. Mine did today.

Message: This just happened to me as well. The battery is also dead as door nail, and currently hooked up to a elec charger and about 80 % charged. When I jumped it last night, it drove but was burning rich puffin black and stalling on idles. So if i understand correctly, the cause may be that the power ceased to tell computers how to gage mixture, and now when i get the battery back up to par i need to reset my computer chip or somehting???

Message: You know I'm not really sure what fixed the problem. I had it towed the dealer. The guy called me to come pick it up and when I got their he was totally busy. He tossed me my keys and said there was no charge because mechanically nothing was wrong. He mentioned they cleaned something by the intake but I left before he changed his mind and decided to charge me since my truck had 97k on it and no warranty.

Message: My 97 dakota was acting similarly. Mine would only try to start but wouldn't. If I gave it gas to start it and let off it would die. I had to give it gas for 5 to 10 seconds ater starting it and then I could let off and it would idle. I disconnected the battery cables for 10 minutes and then reconnected and it started right off and idled fine. Seems to be fixed and thanks alot.
