Subject: 3 cats IP: Logged
Message: I recently found out my 01 dodge dakota r/t has 3 catalyatic converters on it. I'm a bit pissed and want the other 2 cats removed. Is it illegal to remove them and just leave the real cat on there? Will i get any codes? I bet them 2 extra cats are holding back a lot of exhaust sound and performance. Why would DM put 3 cats on this sucks.

Message: My 2003 4.7 Quad Cab has 3 as well, two pre-cats and the main. Most likely there for emission reasons as usual. If you remove your cats, I believe you need to make some adjustments...adapters or wire splicing of some sort to elimate the 02 sensors or the computer will know they are not there and performance will be affected.
That is just what I have gotten from discussions I have read on this board, so don't take all of that as being the absolute truth.

Message: Your precats actually aren't that restrictive. The O2 sensors are on the precats. Replace the 3rd cat w/ a straight pipe or a free-flow cat. Long tube headers are in the works (thanks to DemonDakota) that will be made specifically for a dual exhaust setup. They will eliminate the precats but will come with a free-flow cat on the end of each header. This will help with emisions. In my case i'm not sure because I already have just one cat because mine is and '00 4.7L.
The precats were put on so that all 4.7L's would comply with California standards. DC compensated by putting on a larger throttle body. Went from a 65mm to a 68mm.

Message: i live in tx so could i take off the 3rd cat and pass emissions? if i replaced it with a high flow would it really do anything for sound and performance?

Message: Scuba,
Not sure about the emissions and whether you will pass, you would need to find someone that lives in an area with emissions tests and has taken the 3rd cat off....I am sure there are plenty on this board in that situation. My town does not have emissions testing and hopefully never will.
You will notice a change in sound because of more air flow, not sure how performance will be affected, from reading posts on these boards, people seem to be split 50/50 on whether it helps or does nothing.

Message: Some people have a pipe that they can change in and out with the cat. That way they pass emissions everytime. As far as performance goes, some people report it as being one of their better mods.
