Hi -

I have a 92 Dakota with the 318 and 4speed auto trans; over 170K on her. I just took a 2700mi drive and upon coming home she suddenly doesn't want to start off in first. If I hit the throttle harder it will downshift into first. Also, if I select 1st on the lever she will start off in 1st. All other gears are fine both up and down. Any ideas? I got the truck with about 150K on her and the trans fluid was supposed to have been recently changed. I have no errors on the computer when I do the on/off/on/off/on kinda check. Also, if I reset the computer she starts off in first for the first couple stop and go's. Please help! :-)

Thanks!

Here is my only idea on whats happening... and I say this because of how the resetting the comp temporarily fixes the problem.

The software in there is supposed to be 'adaptive', although many don't notice the difference... So if you regularly drive with a light foot then it'll start in 2nd to mimic that driving style.

I've noticed with a 99 durango that after extensive gas conservative driving it shifted at lower RPMs, and after just a bit of peddle bashing it returned to its norm.

Well, I appreciate the response but if it were to have adaped to my style, it sure as hell wouldn't be starting in 2nd gear :-) When I reset the puter I drove normally and it should have re-learned if that's the case, no?

I don't know much about automagic trannies :-( Manuals sure but not these :-(

Any other ideas? I toyed with the idea that a pump inside might be malfunctioning and not pressuring or something, but again I am clueless on this. Reading my Haynes manual didn't shed any light either.

Check the transmission throttle valve cable, refer to Haynes, It should be within 1/32 when not connected to throttle. Possibly the 1st gear band in the trans needs adjustment, both bands are supposed to be adjusted with every trans fluid change, which I do every 30,000. Maybe this helps?
