Message: Just FYI...
Cubic Inches times 16.387 = Cubic Centimeters
Therefore, CC's divided by 16.387 = CI's
Only two of the many useless facts I know.

Message: Or multiply 4.7 X 61.02 to get Cubic inches.
Revers is to take cubic inches and divide by 61.02 to get the liter displacement.

Message: Or take the bore and stroke to figure out cylinder volume in cubic inches and mulitply by eight. (more accurate)

Message: Do many people consider the volume of the displacement to also include the volume in the head ? Weren't 1970 396" Chevy's commonly called 402's because of the bigger heads ?

Message: 1970 396 was considered a 402 because the blocks were messed up and were bored 30 over from factory making them 402. Even though the badges said 396. The heads were the same as 396. some heads were open chambere some were closed chambered. heads size will change your compresion ratio though

Message: Scat pack brings up an interesting question. Engine size (or displacement as it is sometimes and most correctly called) refers only to the volume of air that is displaced as the piston moves. In some car magazines and vehicle spec sheets that still give the engine size in cubic inches, they will sometimes refer to that number as cid...cubic inches of displacement. Doesn't matter if the unit of measure is cubic inches, cubic centimeters, or cubic liters, the number given always follows the formula CW gave (bore X stroke X number of pistons).

Message: Thanks for straightening that out for me - guess I was misinformed on that - overbore info makes sense. Had a lot of fun in that old Chevelle SS !
