Did notice that it will stop if I take foot of the gas pedal. Then touch the pedal again, and the whine starts.

Message: The higher the ratio the louder the gears get to a point. Even my old Borg-Warner Auss sytle on my GTA with 3.73 made a whine. Try 4.10 or higher, you'll think the 3.92 are quite.
Anything over 3.55 seems to be loud or whinny.

Message: I have an '02 that had the whine at about 50-55mph since day one. It got louder last weekend while we were out of town. By the time we got to the motel it was LOUD and at all speeds. The dealer in Shreveport has it now and is putting a new rear end in it. Said they couldn't repair it because some pieces were welded together due to the heat. It has 2500 miles now. I wonder if they forget to put lube in it??? Hope yours lasts longer.

Message: I have a 1993 Dakota Club Cab that has a rearend whine as well. My friends dad is a Chrysler certified master mechanic and he test drove my truck and told me that the whine is caused by two much backlash (slack) in the ring and pinion gears. He says it does not hurt anything but just proves to be annoying as Hell! He says the whine is a common problem on the Jeep Grand Cherokees as well which is what he specializes in. Hope this bit of info helps.

Message: Thanks for the info fellas. Sounds like a common problem. Ive mentioned it to the dealer everytime ive brought in for service, so if it breaks in the future i can have dodge replace, hopefully.

Message: It sounds to me like the diff is going out. I have seen this happen twice. My friend has to drive a Ford Econline for his work and he said that it started whining at about 55 and when they took it to the shop the diff was shot. The second time it was with our all-wheel drive GMC Safari the front started whining and they said it was the yoke and pinion going out. You had better have it looked at just to be safe.

Message: My 98 whined like that, so did my 93 My soluton was to install a 9.25 inch strange (auburn) posi unit, with yukon ring and pinion, the whine is louder now, because the more aggressive you ring and pinion gears are the louder they are. If the rear whines at certain speeds, and not others, it is probably a bad bearing, if you let it go, you will replace the diff. if you fix it now you wont. The agressive gear whine is a constant noise, but kinda makes the truck sound meaner. If your whine dies off at 20+ mph, it is probably because you are going too fast to hear it. remember that the sound is coming through the bed of your truck, so the other noises from the road, engine, trans, and screaming kids will muffle the noise from your diff. hope this helps.

Message: If you hear a noise when you get on and off the gas (load/unload), it's usually a gear backlash or worn gear issue. If it's a constant noise it's most likely a bearing problem.

Message: My 4.7l 03 dakota used to make wierd moans when going around tight corners in parking lots and when making u-turns. I had it serviced when it started to get bad. The mechanic who opened the diff said he found metal shavings throughout, and that the snap rings had fallen off the posi unit. The estimated cost to overhaul it was $2100. This sounded like bull to me, so i had him fill it back up and keep it as is. This noise stopped. A few months later, it started clinking loudly when I creep at very low speed, but there is no high speed whine or anything else. Should I be concerned? Ive read some horror stories about entire rear axles rolling across four lanes of traffic.
