Subject: open air elements and water IP: Logged
Message: I've got a K&N homebrew intake but no heat shield and I was wondering if anyone out there has any problems with water getting in the intake during intense rains (especially with the front flap removed)or puddles on the road when driving. Seems to me, a driving rain would flow straight into the engine compartment and be sucked in the intake.

Message: I was wondering the same thing. I kept stock airbox but ran soem air duct to the hole where the old rubber flap used to be. dropped in a K&N and it helped more then i thought it would. But the rain and puddle thing is a good question. Any one got an answer?

Message: I use a ram air box with two 4" air ducts running to each side of the rad. I've gone through heavy rain on the highway and a few times through a car wash (most of the time I disconnect the ducts at the rad and cap the openings) and the amount of water that reaches the 14 x 2.83 K&N filter is minimal. HTH.

Message: I've had an open air element for the last 25K+. Being that I live in S. Florida, I drive through the rain alot. The fibers on K&N's as well as S&B's are to thick to let water through. Just don't go submerging your truck and start revving your engine and you won't have anything to worry about.
If it concerns you that much, take off you open element during your states wet months and put your original box back on with a k&N or S&B drop in.
