Message: Alright folks, this is a good one. Has anyone out there put a Mopar Performance 380 horse/360 in a Dakota? I'm currently working on a '92 Dakota with the 318 and would really like to install one of these engines in the truck. My goal is to utlilize the fuel injection, but I'm worried the computer would have a fit with the 360. I've contacted the Mopar hotline and the gentleman told me the 360/Ram computer is wired differently than the 318/Dakota, so that kind of eliminates the possibility of using the Ram computer.
I did get in touch with a Mopar Performance dealer and he said that I "might" be able to use it with the 318 computer, as long as, I increase the fuel pressure, run bigger injectors, and a bigger throttle body. If that is the case, then it shouldn't be that big of a deal. I had planned on doing that anyway.
Any help will be appreciated.

Message: I asked the same question a couple of months ago. Fuel injection is impossible to run on those crate motors. My suggestion is to get an older 360, with the money you were going to spend on EFI build up the motor and keep it carb'd. If you search for the thread you will probably find it.

Message: Ive installed 3 of the 380hp crate engines, they are a nice stout engine, never in a dakota tho.I used 2 holley 4150, 750 cfm carbs and the other was a holley projection throttle body injection and it wasnt really worth the extra cash IMO,its a carb engine unless you have the tools to tune your own pcm,I doubt the stock pcm would work very well with the crate engine

Message: The stock PCM will not work. The cam is way to large for practical fuel injection use. Hell it is to big for a daily driver carbed.

Message: i'm building up a '76 360 to go in my 92 dak and it's gonna be carbed. i'm just tossing as much of the elec. and comp. stuff as i can cause that stuff sucks, anyway, anyone worried about passing emissions with these things, i know the 380/360 is not legal for sale on pollution controlled vehicles.

Message: Get the 380/360 short block and use the R/T heads. Use a Hughes Engines cam (www.HughesEngines.com) as well as the Intake and TB. Get an Autometer A/F Ratio meter and splice it into your O2 sensor. You may need larger injectors. You can get an adjustable fuel pressure regulator to go on the return side of the fuel line to fine tune. If your injectors are large enough your computor will control the engine just fine in closed loop mode(below 75% throttle). You will need to fine tune fuel pressure in open loop, which is when the PCM relies on the programed fuel map, get the Mopar Performance engine PCM for your 5.2L and go from there. Trust me, I swapped a V8 into my Dak from a Ram van. I have a 93' CC 2wd with a ton of induction and exhaust mods, and I still run the stock injectors, runs a little rich at full throttle, controls perfect in closed loop.

Message: I got a 91 dakota that has a 5.2 liter 318 and I want to swap it with the 380 crate engine. As far as I know it will bolt right in, but what about fuel injection? I know that the stock injection system won't work the way it is so I was thinking about using holly projection. Any recomendations? Also, where can I get some headers that will fit? Nobody has them for a 91.

Message: I am learning that there are many computer systems you can use to tune in any motor combo. I ran into the problem with my 340 and i am in the process of bying the fast or accel dfi kit. These allow you to use any injector you want. they just don't control the tranny so you can use your stock computer or perf computer for tranny and gauges etc. The allow you to be very efficient on the street and get the most perf at the track a little pricy but flashes cost about 400 and they usually band aid your problem and not fix them. As for the crate motors sounds like good horse but i believe those are still cast cranks it kind of limmits your upgrades in the futre.
