Subject: what type of cam IP: Logged
Message: Hello,
i was wondering what type of cam i should get and what all i would have to changeif i did so. i ahve a 97 ext cab 4x4 with the 5.2 V8 i dont really go off roading to often.i do like to use the gas pedal though when im on the road.seems like people dont expect a 4x4 truck this size to go like they do when you get on it.i have a K&N mopar performance cold air intake gibson cat back duals borg warner cap and rotor 8mm wires autolite plugs and the 180% tstat. i was told that i might be able to get some what of the same performance by putting in a chip and was wondering if this would be true i know the chip would be more money but it would be an easier job im sure. any info will be helpful and thankyou again for helping out. Kurt

Message: pushrods rule. cams suck.
thats why the 3.9, 5.2, or 5.9 will outlast any 4.7 out there.

Message: WHAT THE HELL? nice help there guy!
hey kurt, i dont know much about cams, but i hear the mopar R/T cam sucks. another option would be to change the rocker arms to the 1.7's. it gives the cam a little more lift and duration.
on my 98 5.2 they really made a differance. expecially from 3k rpm up!
for the chip, mopar is the best out there! hypertech and jet sucks.
hope this helps
Eric

Message: The 1.7 rr gives you around 2-3 degrees of duration and about .02 in lift from .434 to around .458.

Message: I bet he meant Over Head Cam. I like my push rod engine. But I bet that OHC could rev higher with it having less moving parts. Only thing would be the added cost of cams, more stress on the cylinder head where the cam shaft bearing are. Fact of life is, there is pros and cons to everything.

Message: Go to HughesEngines.com to find what type of cam to use. There are other things to upgrade first, exhaust, hedders, Throttle body, air filter, intake, engine computer (use the Mopar computer after several upgrades).
