Message: Is the 4.7 as prone to pinging as the 5.2 and 5.9? I'm just wondering whether I'll be able to run 87 octane or not. With my 5.9, I had to run 93, even with no mods, to keep it from pinging.

Message: What does pinging sound like. I've been told kinda like metal marbles bouncing around in the engine? I have never heard anything like that -- I guess I can be thankful for that, eh?

Message: 3.9/5.2/5.9 where prone and still are prone to ping due to faulty belly pan gasket or design on the intake manifold. With a little more than 10k on my 5.9 I notice that it had a small leakage of oil entering the Air system on the intake while I was removing the oil intake to replace with a new Mopar M1. 87 octane work great on my 5.9L.

Message: Hi,I have a 02 quadcab with the 5.9 and every once in a while in park idleing I hear a rattling/knocking sound.I took in dealership and they replaced torqe converter and trans pump.I got the truck back and still does same thing.I sounds like it coming right in front on the trans somewhere.I took it back to dealership but truck hasn't made the sound when its at the dealer, mso they can't do anything.Anyone one ever heard on this sound? Thanks Brian

Message: Hmm, can't say I know. Is this a 4x4? Does the idle speed change when it occurs? When you hear the sound where you in the cab or outside? Check the exhaust system, bad cat that soon maybe? Loose pipes? Loose heat shield? Bad fuel? You should carry a hand held audio recorder to record the sound, if it's that important to you :)

Message: Yes its a 4x4.The noise sounds like its coming from inside towards the back of the motor.I only hear it when its in park and idle.If I shift to neutral it goes away.Usually at first it makes a loud pop and then starts rattling/Knocking.I don't really hear any change in idle when it does it.Thanks Brian

Message: The reason I asked if it was a 4x4 because the transfer case for you 4x4 should be right there. Have you ever used it in 4x4 mode? You might want to engage it then see if it makes the noise or just engage it then disengage it to make sure it was fully disengaged. Doesn't hurt to try.
