Subject: clunky trans. IP: Logged
Message: I have the 44re trans. When I put it into reverse i get this clunking sound. It does not happen in forward just reverse. If i have someone in the cab do it while i am looking under the truck i the trans. yoke move and then the clunk sound happens. any clues?? it is annoying and i hope it is not screwing up the trans. I thougnt for a bit that the u joints caould be doing it so i replaced then to no avail.
Thanks
Nathaniel

Message: my auto 3.9 did the clunk thing in reverse and to park, and my R/T does the same thing, worse when it's cold...never had any troubles with either tranny...

Message: Every dodge I've ever owned did this. Its either slop in the tranny output yoke, or slack in the pumpkin's spiders. All I can say is that my clunk diminished when I went powertrax.

Message: Prolly not. The clunk noise is made by something external to the trans.

Message: the clunk is not the trans, in most cases it is the backlash on the gears in the rear end, a bit is normal, but as your dak ages the clunk will eventually get worse. Unless it really rocks the truck don't worry about it

Message: Wow.. a clunk. I think we complain a little to much on the little noises we here from our trucks.

Message: See how much back lash you have. If the yoke turns more than 45 deg its too much.
If you have no noises its probably just spyders.
Also these trans love mild shift kits. They correct a lot of shift concerns and longevity.
