Subject: Timing chain? IP: Logged
Message: My 1991 5.2 backfires through the intake when I start it and also when accelerating. It has 115K miles on it. Compression is 148 on all cylinders. Map sensor, O2 sensor, and EGR are new as are the computer, plugs, wires and caps. Fuel pressure is good. Could a loose timing chain be the problem? According to the timing mark, there is about 14 degrees of slack in it. I'm thinking this may be causing it to fire before the valve are fully closed. Anyone have any ideas?

Message: I think you are only allowed 12 degrees in chain slack, ithink it is time to replace it.

Message: Flat lobe on the cam will do that 2.
Pull valve covers and start it up and look for rockers that are not moving as much as the others.

Message: check your distributor for slop in it, pull the cap and see how much turning play you have in it, if more than 1/4 inch of play replace the distributor bushings,
