Subject: Anyone ever dealt with this? IP: Logged
Message: Hey Daksters, got a small problem with my 5.2. Seems my rear u-joint is bad and I am going to replace it yet there is this strange plate bolted right under the joint! It seems to be some sort of drive shaft disconnect and the cable runs all the wat to just in front of the drivers seat. The repair manual shows nothing like this and I am not sure exactly how to dismantle the thing. Anyone ever seen this before?

Message: I am going to assume that you bought your Dak used. It sounds like you have a disconnect like you said. RV'rs put these on the driveshafts so that they don't have to crawl under and unbolt the driveshaft everytime they flat tow the truck. My suggestion would be to take it to a place in your area that services motorhomes and busses cause they also do modifications to cars and trucks to be pulled behind them. They would be able to tell you for certain if the driveshaft was altered for this conversion or if it is something you can just take of and replace with a factory u-joint. Hope this helps.

Message: Thanks Quad47. Just found out that is is a Remco drive disconnect. Only thing to do now is locate a new drive shaft (Mech told me the shaft has to be replaced.) Don.t really like it, but I don't trust this thing especially when I stomp on the gas!. It was a towed vehicle that someone spent a few bucks to convert. (About $800)

Message: Can I put one of these disconnects on the front driveshaft of my '02 QC AWD so as to convert it to RWD?

Message: Never mind ... just realized that the t-case in the AWD is merely an open diff, so one of these Remco shafts would just send all my power to the front, leaving me to sit there like a dolt. Oh well, good for a conversation with myself anyway.
