can anyone tell me the exact mpg difference between a stock quad cab 2wd 4.7 w/ 3.55 and a stock quad cab 2wd 4.7 w/ 3.92? Is there much of a loss at all? Is there much of a performance gain at all?

Around town the MPG will be better w/3.92's (less work on motor in stop & go traffic. But you'll suffer a bit on HWY. Not sure of exact numbers though. 'Performance' is better w/3.92's

at about 80mph 4.7L Club Cab 4x4 3.92's with all the HD goodies, I'm reving about 2550-2600rpm's and the overhead display says I'm getting 15mpg or so.

I do mostly freeway driving, 60 miles per day, and I don't miss the few mpg's I would get if I had 3.55's, not to mention the power loss if you go with bigger tires

I've got the 3.92's but in a 4x2. On the highway at about 70-80 mph I get between 17-18. If I go about 60mph I get about 19.5. In the city I get around 14mpg. I'm hoping to increase this with the addition of a new air intake. It's pretty amazing that my V8 gets better mpg than the Jeep cherokee 4x4 and the nissan v6 4x4 i've owned in the past.

I am going to order a 4.7 4X4 club cab with tow
package etc. I am going to tow a horse trailer.
It seems every dealer has a different idea about the 3.55 and the 3.92, and which one I should order, I need to know the downside of a 3.92??
Any help would be appreciated thanks...

The only downside to the 3.92's is a little lower mpg. From my earlier posts I stated that I really didn't notice that much drop. You will get better towing power and better acceleration out of the 3.92's. For pulling a horse trailer you should definitely get the 3.92's. I've seen toyota tundra's pulling horse trailers with ease so I know a Dakota can.

I have the 3.55 gears, would it be worth it to get the 3.92's? Also you say there is a 1000lb difference in towing, what are the numbers with each?

Thanks for the input, Jon the specks are as follows in a 2001 model 4.7:
Auto-3.55 is 4850 lbs/standard is 5200lbs
Auto-3.92 is 6150 lbs/standard is 6200lbs
Hope that helps, me I am still confused, really need to drive both I think before I decide, to see if there is much difference in how they feel on the road. Thanks again guys.

I have the 3.92 LSD in my '01 CC w/4.7 auto. I think the difference comes down to two things. One, you will most likely get better all-around mileage with the 3.55. Two, if you are going to tow anything larger than a snowmobile/motorcycle/atv trailer then I'd get the 3.92. I have need to ocassionally tow a small Kubota tractor/backhoe and really appreciate the 3.92 when doing so. Oh yes, one more data point: I just returned from towing a *loaded* 6x12 UHaul from home to Las Vegas (450 miles). Kinda nice to just pop the OD button, set the cruise, and let the Dak scamper up hill and down with the trailer. Kinda sucked at gas stations, mileage averaged around 10.5-11 but most of the time we were at 70-75 mph.

Best,

DG

I've own two Dak's. My 98 had the 3.55 gears and my current 01 has the 3.92. The gas milage difference between the two, I think is insignificant. I personally like the the 3.92's better than the 3.55's. Off the line the truck moves quicker and responds better. Like everyone has said before; If your going to tow anything or dragrace, then get the 3.92's. Either way, you won't lose. It's still a Dak!

3:55`s are the perfect all around gear with a 5 speed for the auto I would get 3:92`s,that is with the stock wheels,I never liked 3:92`s or lower uunless you had tires over 31 inches it makes 1st gear alomst useless in a 5speed.The 1-2 shift with 4.7 5speed and 3:55`s is almost perfect and 3rd is blast but then again if you want all out towing then get a 5.9 4x4 3:92 with towing package and the 2000 payload option which has the heavier springs and bigger rear drum brakes

Let's talk, I'll trade you gears, if you have the 9.25 rear end. I think you do. I have the 9.25, 3.55's LSD, in a 2001 dak.

E-mail me about it

Basic 3.55 vs 3.92 comparison---

If you have 3.55s-- you'll find on the fwy, on a grade, ever so slight-- if you cruise in the 70 mph range, the tranny will hunt (OD off OD on)-- frequently-- With 3.92s you won't experience this (unless you are more than 3/4 to the floor and/or you are on a steep grade).

3.55s can tow in the 65 mph range in Drive (3k rpm), whereas with 3.92s, you are limited to 57-59 mph (3k rpm) in Drive (4th gear on the manual transmission).

3.55s get the best mileage in the 75-80 mph range (rpms in the 2200+ area in OD) whereas the 3.92s get their best mileage in the 65-70 mph range.

If you have 3.55 gears, keep the OD off around town to get better mileage-- or you'll get the OD-off/on hunt at 45 mph or so.

Having pulled with both the 3.55s, and 3.92s--- The 3.55s are a better choice if you aren't near your max towing capacity, and tow on mainly flat level roads, and run at a fairly good speed (60-65 mph cruise).

If you run in the hills, tow a heavy load, or don't plan on pulling at speeds above 60 mph-- the 3.92s are a better way to go-- If you changing gearing-- go for the 4.10s (you'll get even better performance, lower the stress on the motor on heavy loads, plus run only a 150 rpm higher than than the 3.92s at the same road speed.) Unloaded the 4.10s will give your truck a good boost of low end, and you'll not experience much change in MPG (maybe improve your city mileage, and drop .25-.5 a gallon highway at high speed).

I'm still on the factory Goodyear LS 255x65x16. At 70MPH I'm turning 2500rpm. Look at my thread I posted, "4.10s installed" (Dakota Performance Board), 4/04/2003. I checked my hwy gas mileage after the install too. With cruise set at 70MPH I got 21.2MPG, needless to say I was pleasantly surprised.

Problem is, one of us has to be down while the other supplies the gears, etc.

I guess you have the 9.25 inch rear end, and posi, right. I don't know enough to know if the gears are different from the open to posi (LSD) when changing the gears.
