Subject: RE: 3.55 vs. 3.92 gear ratios

Message:
I have a 99 V6 5-speed with a Chrystler 8.2 axle, with an axle ratio of 3.21

I'm planning to convert to a limited slip and wanted to know what gear ratio I have, and whether I should go with a higher gear ratio..for off-line performance?

I don't understand whether gear ratio and axle ratio are the same?? If they are, mine is 3.21 which seems very low

TIA
Kevin

I have a 1999 5.2L Dak 4X4 with the 8.25 open dif 3:55 gears, I want to keep the gear ratio but convert to the Limited Slip Dif. Do you have to replace everything or what? What do I need to do to add the Limited Slip Differential to my existing rearend?

Thanks for the link Kevin. Sounds like the Dana Trac-Loc is the way to go. I have a friend who can install it, shouldn't cost to much since I'm not changing gear ratios.

How much time does the 3.55s kill off 1/4 vs. 3.92s. Gas mileage difference? I have a 3.55 open and its killing me traction wise. How much does that Dana Trac Loc run?

"Getting Dana Trac-Loc installed today for $190 + installation. :)"

That's the quote from mpiL1 on the link I left earlier. I spoke with him and he said he simply went to a 4x4 shop and gave them the info...I assume the shop hooked him up with the part.

How can I find out which gears I have? None of the
info I have from 2001 new purchase says it. All it
says is Axle- Anti-Spin Differential. I have the 4.7
V-8, 45RFE Trans.

Have a 2004 Dakota 4x4 ext. cab, but someone put a
Dakota SUV rear end with 3.55 gears with no positrac
or limited slip - (I guess that's what you call
open), incompatible with the 3.92 of the front end,
and I'm wanting the positrac 3.92 carrier with ring &
pinion if it can fit the SUV case.
Also, will I need a shim set to adjust gear contact?

I put a used axle with 3.92 in.
Now it's a completely different truck! MUCH easier
on the 3.7L than the 3.55, and I can shut off the
overdrive for hills or passing. Cruises at 80 with
very little throttle now, and I think she'll pull
a load.
