Message: I have a 99 Dakota pickup with close to 80,000 miles. Last week the "check engine" light flickered going up a hill. This is the first time I have seen it an being just out of warranty, I never worried about it before. I tried to do the test using the on/off test and got absolutely no light messages at all. I tightened up the gas tank cap just in case that was the problem. My Dodge dealer service rep tried the key test and when he saw no response, he told me that that test did not work on my truck.
Its the 318L fuel injected model. This didn't ring true when I asked him to check out why it didn't work, he told me not to worry since it didn't stay on.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Phil

Message: the key on/off trick only works on '00 & up trucks. you can go to a local autozone and they will read the codes for free. if the light hasn't come back since i wouldn't worry about it unless it comes back on again.

Message: sparky,
looking in my 'Superchips' book that came with my tuner, it says: P0440 Evap Sys Perf.
Maybe others can tell you what that usually is.
At times, I have P0442, and it's always been the gas cap not tinght, or loosing its seal.
Drive it like its paid for!
