Subject: Put headers on and truck sounds horrible IP: Logged
Message: HI i have a 99 r/t and i just put mopar headers into a 3" y pipe which exits into a 3" 40 series flowmaster with dual outlets with 2.5" tails and out to the rear. Well needless to say this thing is damn loud and actually doesnt sound very good when normally accelerating.Especially in the cab. I was wondering what muffler could i switch to, to get rid of the horrible drone the flowmaster is creating. i was thinking a dynomax ultra flow but after reading previous posts it seems like that wouldn't be the best choice.Anyones input would be greatly appreciated. I'm mainly looking for something that will quiet it down when cruising around 50- 60 miles per hour.Thank you in advance.

Message: Borla, or Gibson... and don't put that flowmaster into a respectful dumpster... find some dirty and banged up to match it! hehehehe
Seriously... Gibson if your on a budget and want a milder tone.
Borla if you want a more agressive tone, but it will cost you.

Message: Or magnaflow. Costs less than Gibson too. All stainless. Truckperformance.com has them for around a $100 I think.

Message: Seems like Flowmaster gets slammed a lot around here. I've put over 300,000 miles on different models with no complaints. 40 series were never intended to be quiet. 50 series (16" long) is a good compromise, but it sounds like you would be happy with a 70 series (22" long), also called "Big Block". I've been real happy with my last two 70's, on a '92 5.2, and now on a '01 4.7, both with post-muffler duals. The sound out the back is similar to a 50 series, but way less floorboard noise. If you have a Dak you plan to keep a long time, you will enjoy the sound without the pain.

Message: Thanks for all your help guys i was kinda leaning towards dynomax all along but ive also been thinking about gibson. Also what dynomax is better super turbo or ultra flow? BTW i dont dislike flowmaster. My truck was actually kinda quiet i thought for having a 40 series flowmaster on it before the headers but now it just plain sucks. Thanks Again
