Message: A fuel pump is like a replacement part, like an airfilter or oil filter, it would not void warranty. You do need to change them sometime. Just stuff like modifications to the gas tank (welding, enlarging holes, lowering pump etc) would void it I would think.
Did you say you WANTED to hear the buzzing, I don't know about the R/Ts, but my fuel pump for the 2002 4.7L is loud enough for me.
I plan on installing a inline fuel filter actually, Bernd has one and catches crap in it all the time, so it looks to be a pretty good idea. ANyone else done this?

Message: Hey guys, speaking of gastanks and pumps and so forth, here's a tech tip for you. On my '93 CC LE I had a problem with the gas guage malfunctioning. The problem was due to the sending unit in the tank going bad. I had to replace this damn thing about 4 times at a cost of $86.00 a pop! Finally I talked to my mopar mechanic friend who showed me a Chrysler service bulliten that said the cause of the sending unit failure was due to a poor ground between the sending unit and the guage. Chrysler fix was to replace the entire wiring harness from the tank forward with an updated one that provided a ground wire that you were to attach to the body somewhere behind the dash. It involved spending about $220 bucks for the harness and pulling the gauge cluster out to make the repair.
With the guidence of my mopar mech he told me to drop the tank (had to be done to replace the sending unit anyway)and disconnect the plug on top of the fuel pump. The plug on the 1993's has four wires. Two hots and two grounds. Each for the pump and sending unit. He told me to cut the ground wires at the plug and splice the wires together (that's both the wires coming out of the plug with the wires coming from the harness). VIOLA! Problem solved! By doing this you provide the sending unit with a better ground via the pump ground wire.
The poor ground on the sending unit was causing the electrical current to seek ground through the gasoline itself causing the contacts on the sending unit to burn! I personally think Dodge/Chrysler should've issued a recall instead of a stupid service bulliten but what do I know.
Anyway, if any of you have been experiencing simular problems with your gas guage then try the fix I suggested. So far my guage has been working reliably for almost a month now. I'll keep you posted if it starts top act up again. Happy Moparing guys!
Mike

Message: I have a 1997 Dakota 318ci engine. It is extremly hard to start even when warmed up. A lot of cranking and pumping the gas. After it starts it runs strong and pulls well. I have good spark, new plugs and plug wires. I think is may be the fuel pump, fuel filter or both to some degree. I was told that a simple way to to replace these is to pull the bolts that hold the bed to the frame and lift it off. This allows access to the top of the gas tank eliminating the need to remove the tank. Any thought on this?
Thanks, Rod

Message: I dropped a full gas tank on my 92 last year. It's not that hard. Use a floor jack and a H shaped brace to support the weight and let it down easily. You can disconnect the wires and hoses as it lowers.
Before you pull the bed, decide where you want to put the thing. It isn't exactly small.
Rod, I would check the fuel system from the back up to the front. Pull the filter. Replace the filter. It's cheap and you should probably have done it anyway. Then move up to the fuel rails. Turn power on so that the pump has power. Chech the shrader valve in the fuel rail for fuel pressure. You will know if you have it. That will check the pump.

Message: Hi Guys,
I have a 1993 Dakota with a 318. I bought the truck used in '97 and have since had to gain access to the fuel tank about 4 times. Three times because the sending unit went out and once to replace the pump. I've done it both ways. I've dropped the tank and I've lifted the bed off. I personally prefer to lift the bed because it gives you better access to the hoses and wires you must disconnect in order to get the pump unit out of the tank. At least on my Dakota, Dodge didn't leave any extra wire or hose to allow you to drop the tank down very far before you're at the end of your rope so to speak and you're having to reach up on top of the tank blindly to get the hoses and wires unhooked. A royal pain in the backside if you ask me. So if you can talk a few friends into helping you lift the bed for say, a case of beer, then that is a better way to go I think. As far as where to put it, I just lifted it up and slid it back far enough to clear the fuel pump and then went to work. Saves having to carry the not-so-lite bed around while you look for a place to set it.

Message: NAPA has the replacement pump/filter/pressure reg for around $170. Much better price than the $400 + from the dealer. I chose to pull the box on my 4x4 w/22 gallon tank. Due to the plastic accordian assembly that it is, seemed like an easier approach. Rachet straps and a cherry picker if you don't have a few buds handy.

Message: ive got a 94 3.9 extended cab, So far ive knocked all the bugs out of her (broken hvac.. everything, balljoints , every conceivable ignition wire and plug , and many many others. ONE fix worries me...when the tank reads half full (in this truck's case half empty)the truck starts acting up, like it is sucking air. also, on occasion, the needle will "dance" quickly up and down and not from gas sloshing around. My question for you people; what the hell is going on? is it my sending unit? ive read something about there being a filter inside the tank that you have to drop the whole assembly for, i dont know why the duds at dodge would do something so fun. could it be the guage itself? i hope it isnt, because that is a tiny tiny bit of gas for the truck to be filled on (12 bucks @ 1.75 estimate- i give it like this because i know no one gets their gas just by the number of gallons)
So if anyone has any ideas on what the hell is wrong with this thing, i'll be in buisiness.

Message: Jon,
I can't think of why you would be getting symptoms of sucking air because the pump is totally submerged in the tank. You might drop your tank and replace the filter on the bottom of the pump and then also replace the filter along the driverside frame rail near the tank as well and see if that solve your performance problem.
As for the guage dancing around, it sounds like your sending unit has gone out or is going out. Refer to my earlier post for instructions on how to fix it and keep it from happening again. If you have any questions let me know and I'll try to help you as much as I can.
Good luck!
Mike

Message: you can get the bed off and access the fuelpump/gauge assembly without completely removing the bed unit-- the dealers here remove the front bed bolts completely and the rear ones about 3/4 of the way and then raise the front of the bed on long jackstands so that the bed is about 18" up in the front you can get to everything that way easily- the when done just let it down in front again and bolt it up tight-

My problem is that when the gadge is reading 1/4 tank it runs like is almost out of gas (shuges). but when tank is full it runs like a dream. Also is the sending unit suppost to move freely or are the three screws on the side to be tighten to prevent moving? hope some one can help

| Sending Unit for Fuel Gauge... IP: Logged
Message: Hello, I need some advice. I have a 1998 SLE extended cabl w/ a 3.9 Liter and 217,000 miles, the fuel gauge works fine until it hits the 3/4 mark, then it drops to empty for about 15 seconds (And the annoying bell comes on!!!) then it goes back up for about 30 seconds, then starts the whole process over again until it's time to get gas again, could the ground be loose, or does the sending unit need to be replaced? and what is the cost of this to do myself? Also, does Dodge have a 100,000 / 200,000 Mile Club? and if so, how do I go about finding out info on this? Thanks, great site by the way! John

Message: I recently purchased a 1997 Dodge Dakota for my 16-year old son. The truck ran great until yesterday. It idles bad, couldn't get it to go more than five miles an hour. Later it ran great again. I believe it could be the fuel filter. However, I am told by the dealership here that to purchase a fuel filter, I must purchase the entire assembly. Is it necessary to change the entire assembly or can I just replace the fuel filter?
