Subject: P0442 Fault code (EVAP leak) IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2001 4.7 Dodge Dakota Club Cab 4x4. The check engine light came on and is showing the fault code P0442. From what I looked up it appears to be a small leak in the EVAP purge system. Has anyone had this problem? What are the possible root causes? If so, how was it fixed?
Your reply is greatly appreciated.

Message: The gazz cap is the first step at AZZHOLE so eloquently pointed out. Check to make sure that there isn’t any debris either on the neck or on the cap that could cause a vapor leak. Clear the code and see if it reappears. If it does, take your truck in and have a smoke test performed. More that likely it will be a EVAP pump and NOT your gazz cap as AZZHOLE stated. Then again, you know what they say, “everyone got one, an AAZZHOLE and an OPINION. And now you’ve heard from both

Message: My newer o3 had a split hose on the canister on the frame rail drivers side. Cut it back and re-installed, reset computer and all set. Do a search entering po442, thats how I found solution. Saved me a trip to dealer. (turns out i`m going anyway, water on passenger floorboard)

Message: Thanks Dan I found the vapor canister. It has 2 cracked hoses coming off of it called dealer and they are actually like hose kits one is $30 the other one is $82. I tried Auto Zone and all they caold say is "How long of a hose do you need?" Hopefully the 2 from the vapor canister will fix my problem

Message: I recently replaced the u-shaped hose on the canister under my truck, cost me $1.50.
just make sure you tell them it's for fuel so they get you the right hose. You don't want vacuum hose.
they sell the hose by the foot.
If i had the motivation i'd replace it all with braided and not have to worry about it again :)

Message: Fixed the cracked hoses from the canister, only cost me 6 bux cause one of the hoses is actually 2 sizes, anyway engine light shut off after 2 days but a code p0455 is still there. So to simplify I have a code but no engine light.

Message: I had the same code and tried the gas cap- no luck. I then replaced both hoses going into the evap canister which were both cracked- no luck. I then did a Google search and found a reply from somebnody related to this problem which was right on the money. I had a cracked hose under the hood which was near the green test cap for the evaporator system. One you locate this cap then follow the hose to the plastic "T" coupler and check both of those hoses attached to the coupler. That is where my crack was. I replaced the hose and all has been well since then. The lesson here is to check all hoses comprising the evap system if the gas cap/canister hose replcement does not give you the fix.

Message: Nice call Eric B. I've had the evap code, new cap didn't clear it up. It was at the T you refer to where it connects to hardline going to the tank. I took some pics and hope the links will work of the hose and the charcoal canister. I had a different code though, P0459 I think

Message: Look at the vapor Canister itself. When you top-off it’s possible for fuel to travel through the vent tube and flood your vapor canister with raw, liquid gasoline. Although canisters work well with gasoline vapors, they dislike liquid gasoline with a passion. Once liquid gasoline has entered the canister it routinely causes poor performance. Conditions like rough idle, hesitation, stalling, and sometimes even an illuminated MIL. (MIL stands for Malfunction Indicator Lamp and may have the words ‘service engine soon’ or ‘check engine’ displayed on its face. MIL’s are usually yellow or orange in color.)

Walked up me mom's Dakota 2001 4.7 4 door (WITH 8K MILES), popped the hood, grabbed the vacum hose next to the green service port and there it was in my hand as it fell off, replace the hose and now good to go.

Message: I finally got the MIL (P0442) to go off in my Dakota after 8 months by using the advice in this message thread. Piece of hose about 4.5 inches long by the fuse box right after the green evap test port had cracks on both ends. Replaced...and issue resolved in 5 minutes and for less than $2. Thanks!!!
