Subject: 4.7 Knock Sensor? IP: Logged
Message: Does the 4.7 (2001 model year) have a knock sensor? I can't seem to find any information about it. I am still facing a terrible pinging problem - even on 93 octane from Shell. The pinging happens even if I am just trying to maintain speed up a SLIGHT incline. Dealer says it is a charastic of my engine and won't fix! (this is after they said that it IS a problem and tried everything they could think of to fix it and came up empty handed) I even contacted DC customer relations and they also say it is a charastic of my engine!! This is total BS!! I have even replaced my plugs with the colder Autolite plugs with no difference.

Message: Have you tried just using regular to mid grade gas. The higher octane isnt always better.

Message: Don't let dealer B.S. you - this is not a characteristic of the 4.7. I can tow 3000 lb trailer uphill in July with the AC on without pinging. There is probably something wrong, make them find it.

Message: I have tried burning all three grades 87, 89, and 93. The 93 helps very very little so I switched back to 87. I don't think I'm burning any oil except 1/4 - 1/2 qt every 3,000 miles which the dealer says is normal?? I have been around and around with 2 different dealers and DC customer relations.
I have considered arbitration but have come to find out that arbitration is not an option after the initial 36,000 mile warranty. (even though I reported the problem at 20,000 miles! I was trying to give them a chance to make it right but in the process I have lost my arbitration option!!
Also, I bought this truck used with only 4,000 miles on it and in Illinois if the vehicle was purchased used, the lemon law does not apply. I have had the vehicle in the shop about 15 times for the SAME problem and DC refuses to help!!
I love the truck but the pinging has to stop!

Message: eallen,
I've got a 4.7, 5spd, Quad cab, now with about 37500 miles on it.
The only time it ever pinged, was when I filled up at a way off brand station, and got some bad gas. ONe tank later, and then on, never a ping.
By the way, I only use Regular gas, whats that 86 or 87 octane.
Also, although it's not much oil consumption, I think its too much.
So, I think you're right, it shouldn't ping, and it shouldn't burn oil. It sounds like you've done all you can as far as DC is concerned, really is kinda a bummer for a fellow dak owner.
Sorry, after all that, I don't have a solution for you. Good luck

Message: Believe it or not, the dealer considers 1 qt. of oil burning up
at 3000 miles is a acceptable amount. Even the best of the
engines out there(2003 BMW M3, motor trend reports 3.5
qts in 12000 miles)burn oil. I change my oil at 5000 miles
using mobil1 syn and have never seen any oil usage. I do
have a very slight ping going up steep grades on 87 octane,
but it dissapears on 89+......it never pinged before the HO
cams or 360intake.
To solve some of my pinging probs, I installed a 180 stat
and colder plugs, seemed to help.

Message: There is no way this is a standard problem. I have a '99 Jeep GC and '01 Dak with the 4.7. You should have NO knock with any reasonable gasoline.

You have to be careful on how you get them fixed at the
dealer.....they always want to give death flashes on your
computer and it will turn your truck into a pig of the line.

Message: Thanks for all of your replies!! I just did a thermostat swap over the weekend and with a combo of the new 180 degree stat, autolite 3923(?) plugs and 89 octane gasoline the ping seems to be 95% gone!! I hope it stays this way because I am happy with it now. I really didn't think a thermostat would make that much difference but I was willing to try anything to get rid of the stupid ping. I would recommend the thermostat swap to anyone who is experiencing ping. Just make sure you bleed the coolant when replacing it so no air gets trapped in there. Also make sure to tighten the bolts (2) on the thermostat housing to factory specs (115 INCH pounds / 9.58 FOOT pounds, I think) any more and you will strip the threads on the motor. (I didn't have any problems using a torque wrench) Also, go underneath to get at the thermostat on the 4.7 You do NOT have to remove anything except the black plastic splash guard underneath. I know some websites (Alldata) say you must remove the drive belt, alternator, a/c compressor and idler pully. THIS IS NOT TRUE!! just go from underneeth.
Again thanks for all your help and good luck!
