does anyone have an answer on why the fuel gauge does not work on my '94 dakota. It will show full tank when the tank is topped off, but will drop to empty when I start to go; (even at 5 mph). How will i fix this problem and does anyone know how much it would cost me in repairs by shop vs myself?

Not sure if the newer daks are the same way as old vehicles or not when it comes to this. but here I go.

How they work to sense the fuel level is an arm with a float on the end of it inside your gas tank, attached to a rehostat which sends the analog signal (electronic sending unit).

My guess since its when you start to move its those mechanics that have gone, or possibly one of the wire connections are loose.

As for doing the work yourself, if you don't have any experience with such things, I'd suggest you go no further on your own than checking all the wires and connections.

I just fixed mine. I have a 96 5.2 and everything is in the fuel tank. (fuel pump, regulator, filter and a few other goodies) It was no big deal to fix it...There are 2 ways to get to it if yours is in your tank. 6 bolts and a few wires and off comes your bed,-- the other is jack the rear end high and put a couple of floor jacks on the rear axle, then put your floor jack with some wood on it under your tank and after taking out 2 nuts let your tank down alittle then take off all the connections and let it down for the repairs. Try to do it on a empty tank....
