Subject: Rear End Noise IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2001 4.7L V8 with LSD. Lately, I've noticed a whinning sound coming from the rear end at low speeds when backing out of a parking space, making a u-turn, or three-point turn. No whinning sound (that I can hear) at high speeds. The truck has 42K and I have never changed the diff. fluid. I don't recall hearing this sound when the truck was younger. Is this related to the old fluid or what? Please help. Thanks!

Message: Yep your fluid has broken down and no longer lubricates the gears and limited slip properly. Change the fluid as soon as possible with some 75w-90 synthetic (you will need 3qts) be sure and add a bottle of friction modifier too. You can get this at most parts stores for less around $20. If you do it yourself pick up a tube of RTV to seal the back plate on again.
I had the same problem and it goes away once you change the oil. With the synthetic you can go a little longer on you next change, the stock fluid is not very good.
