I just went tot he AMSOIL website and if what is shown there is accurate I will switch to it at 100k miles, both in my engine and in my differentials. Wanted some opinions though. They show it slaughtering Mobil1 in tests, but is there one that beats even AMSOIL?

Sephiroth,
Because I am an Amsoil Dealer, anything I say would be suspect, but I will say this:

I suggest you seek out and find the independent GF-3 (Sequence IIIF) test on Amsoil 10W-30, and the Mobil1 and Amsoil 5W-30 shoot out. In the GF-3 test (basically a GM 3.8L engine run hard with a load, then stripped down) Amsoil 10W-30 went 3X the required test time and still passed. In the 5W-30 shootout the oils were close, but the volatility of the Mobil1 was pretty high at 9%. Amsoil 5W-30 was 5%.

I will leave it up to others to post additional information for now.

More Information:

MOST synthetics have similarly good typical specs, but the performance from better additives, more shear stable VI, higher TBN, etc, can not be easily demonstrated with a test or a chart. These attributes of AMSOIL show up by controlling acids in the oil, eliminating corrosion in the engine, maintaining viscosity throughout the drain interval helping improve performance in the areas of fuel economy and cold weather starting, keeping contaminants in suspension until they get to the oil filter for removal or the oil is drained, and generally keeping the engine cleaner and deposit free. These benefits are not easily demonstrated with a test or a chart. They are only noticeable in actual use.

You mentioned that your truck has 100,000 miles on the odometer. For the record, as long as the vehicle has been well maintained, and it is in good mechanical condition, it can be switched to a synthetic lubricant at any mileage.

Your comment: "They show it slaughtering Mobil1 in tests". I would not use the word slaughter. I think Mobil1 is a VERY good synthetic ... and recommend it daily to anyone that would prefer to buy their products from a local store.
