Message: Backflush everything, then fan clutch and coolant temp sensor are the only things left I can think of.

Message: taking off the gauge will only make me more paranoid. I am the type of person that needs to know how it is running at water temp, oil pres. and volts.

Message: I have a similar problem with my 96 w/ 5.2 ltr.
mine only runs hot when the A/C is on otherwise
it runs fine.
I've replaced radiator, thermostat, water pump, fan clutch, hoses, sensors, etc. etc.
I tried the 180 therm but still had the problem I had to put a 160 in it (until I can find the problem).
With the 160 therm the worst temp I've seen has been in the 190s.
I did a compression test & leak test on the heads & cyl's and all is fine on mine.
you may want to try testing the heads.
If you find your problem b/f me please post it.
I'll do the same.

Message: Do you know if it is really overheating? or are you just putting all your trust into a $15-20 coolant temp sensor before replacing $100+ worth or radiator, water pump, etc parts?

Message: the radiator was replaced before purchasing the truck by a mechanic. I have replaced the water pump, serpatine belt, and thermostat (over $500 in repairs before this problem occured. the only options left is the fan clutch, thermo sensor at the thermostat, or like one mechanic as stated; a cracked head. hopefully the problem wont go as far as the head being cracked or blown head gasket, but cant be the gasket, cause i would notice serious bubbling in the radiator which was stated by my personal mechanic in chicago. but it doesnt hurt to start small pool shark. Also it doesnt show overheating at night when the outside temp is below 100 deg.
