Subject: K&N helps MPG :) IP: Logged
Message: Put my K&N drop in last week - just ran thru the first tank full. Two long trips towing in the summer heat of FL and...
274.0 miles driven / 19.87 gallons used = 13.7 MPG
Considering the average mileage in my 02 QC 4.7l auto 3.92 hovers around 12.7 I'm pretty happy with the $45 filter. My best mileage to date is 13.8 just driving in the city without any towing, so getting 13.7 while towing is awesome especially since the A/C was running the whole time.
If I could squeeze another 1 MPG out of the truck I'd hit the magic number of 14 that Dodge claims... what a happy day that will be ;)

Message: I don't understand why some of you get so bad gas mileage from the 4.7 engine. I have a 01 with a 4.7, 5 spd, posi-traction w/3.92 gear and my mileage ranges from 17 to 22 mpg depending on city/hwy or pulling the trailer I have. I have a car trailer and just the trailer empty is 1900 lbs. I never have got mileage below 17 mpg even pulling the trailer with a load on it.
It seems some get great mileage and others very poor and few in between.

Message: gtm85 beats me!!! :( my dealer swears I should be getting around 17 average with 14 as a low point. That would be great but it's just NOT happening. Now keep in mind I have the automatic tranny and the heavy Quad Cab but it's not a 4X4
The problem is everyone's mileage is all over the place, so I can't get a firm grip on what this engine/tranny combo gets. It's very frustrating to say the least. At 17 MPG I could get 340 miles per tankful - that would be incredible to me.

Message: I don't know what to say. If the dealer says it should be much more and it is under warantee peraps you should tell him to fix it.
All I can say is I can travel about 200 miles on a half a tank of gas....sometimes more or less depending on whether I'm traveling in the city/highway and towing a load.

Message: Hey guys. I have a brand new (800 miles) '03 QC 4.7, Manual, 3.92s...
My mileage thus far has been right around 16MPG - with hardly NO highway miles. I had a '00 Dak (4.7, Auto, CC) - it usually averaged around 16 or 17 even on the highway. The '03, manual, will definitely get better mileage.
JMII - You say if you got 17mpg, you'd get about 340 miles per tank. Do you realize the QC has a 24-gallon tank?
My biggest thing w/ the 4.7 (I've driven one since '99) is it loves to REV - but that really hurts mileage. I always have problems keeping my foot out of it - but you need to, to keep the mileage up.

Message: I know it's a 24 gallon tank... I fill up when the light comes on which is about 20 gallons. I've noticed when launching my boat as the truck sits at an incline on the ramp the gauge drops down to nothing... I'm not sure where the pick up unit is but fear it could run dry sitting at a steep angle for a few mintues with a low tank. So I do not let it get *that* low.
I'm going back to the dealer next month for another b!tch session. I had the PCM flash done for the low idle issue and they said that would fix MPG problem too, so far it has not :( but idle has improved.
Everytime some posts about mileage it's the manual 5 speeds that are fine, it's just these autos that are horrible with 3.92 I think. But the truck is quick and has plenty of power in overdrive for towing so I'm not too upset... untill I pull up to the pump that is ;)

Message: I have a 2003 Ram 4.7L 5-speed. It is a RC 4x4 3.92LS, loaded. I have a 3" muffler, custom "true" cold air intake with K&N filter, 180 stat, removed clutch fan with electric fan on thermal switch, and use Mobil 1 oil. I average 14-15 on the city and 18-21 on the highway in mountainous country. I am extremely happy with this over my 2000 Dakota QC 5.9L 4x4. I figure the Ram weighs a little more, and still gets better mileage. The Dakota ran better but had a lot more mods. I gained about 1-2 mpg with the Dakota after all the mods, and it still got around 10-12 city and 15-17 highway. I just put a tonneau on the Ram to see if I can get a little higher fuel mileage.

Message: i just bought a 99 dodge dakota with the 5.2 in it but it is 4x4 and i know i only get around 13-14 miles to the gallon city but i can push it up to about 16-18 highway depending on the hills and such. but i have a tono cover which helps also and mine is the club cab. right now my biggest problem is finding a decent duel cat back exhost system seems no one makes them for the 5.2 if anyone has any ideas let me know.. the other thing i am trying to find out about is if that motor requires back pressure since some of those motors need it but not sure on this one. also run K&N filter and going to be upgrading it when i get the chance to a K&N cold air induction with some sort of mod pushing air from front to it.

Message: That isn't very good on the mileage
01 QC 4X4 5.9 w/3.55 and I get 16 towing on the highway doing 70+ with the air on and OD off. Otherwise average about 14-15 in town and 18-19.5 highway.
Your 4.7 should do better than my heavy setup. It is 5200# with me in it empty.

Message: I've got a 2002 4x4 QC with about 60,000 miles. 4.7, auto, 3.92 and i've avg about 16mpg since new. This is city and freeway driving. It seems to me that i should get a little bit better mileage than that. But, i will say that driving over the same route, i will get 15.5 mpg and my girlfriend will get at least 18 mpg, even 20 once or twice. Maybe i should just slow down?! As far as the low gas light is concerned, i've run the needle down to just barely above the empty line and when i fill up, its only about 20-21 gallons. I'm afraid to see if it really is a 24 gallon tank.

Message: I'm not happy either. I know the Dak is a truck, but 12.5 - 13.5 on the highway at contant 65 MPH with two dirt bikes in the back just plain sucks. I get a the same mileage in town. I wonder why the disparity among owners in the mileage reported? if I could get 16 I would be happy. Hell, in 6K of driving, the truck has never mangaged to get even 14mpg. I think its time to get a Cadillac STS (faster and gets 27mpg) and buy a trailer......

Message: McyMike - that's my problem too... every time I post something about mileage about half the people with a truck like mine (4.7, auto, 3.92, 2WD) get 12-14 (like you & me) or 16-19!!! I do alot of towing, but my boat is only a 16 foot skiff - it's pretty light, I'm guessing the entire rig fully loaded is less than 2,000 lbs, more like 1,500.
My best mileage to date is 13.8, the good news is that I just managed that for the 2nd time, while towing this time! so I know the K&N went is helping. I run the truck up to about 2,500 RPMs before the auto changes gears so clearly I'm not a lead foot especially with the boat in tow. I put the cruise control at 70 MPH and drive in FL where there are NO hills, so it's in overdrive and not shifting once I'm up to speed.
This is driving me crazy to think some people's trucks get 17 MPH :o that would save me THOUSANDS of $ a year in gas giving the amount of driving I do.

Message: Guys, it got me stumped. I don't know why the disparity in the same basic trucks????. I have the same truck (auto and all the rest) and have never-never seen 17 mpg. As I put miles on... I expected it to get better - it hasn't. I have to admit my mileage on the highway was about 15 until I put the HO cams in two weeks ago...now its 12.5 - 13.5 with a very light foot trying to milk it for all its worth. Glad ur getting acceptable mileage!!!

Message: I have an 01' 4X4 CC 3.55 gears with a catback flowmaster. If i set the cruise at 65 and seldom touch it on the highway, from gas station to gas station, I've gotten no higher than 18mpg. I've noticed that if I get into the pedal any, the milage drops severly. I usually average 14mpg in town with my agressive driving style. I'm going to make a couple more highway runs at different speeds to see how much the mileage changes, heard that you get your best milage around 70mph, but this also has to do with gearing. I feel that 2000 rpm's would be where the truck runs the most efficient.

Message: Just as another data point. My truck is just about the worst option package for gas milage. I have an '02 QC 4.7 auto AWD 3.55. The only missing option to make it the worst package would be 3.92 gears. My average mileage (70/30 highway/city driving) is about 14.5mpg. I've seen a range of 13-16mpg depending on the city/highway ratio. The only performance mods I have are the HO cams and a Volant air intake. Note that neither of those mods affected mpg to any significant degree.

Message: 2000 QC Sport, 3.55 (I think). Recent trip to Branson area (hills) with 3 dirt bikes (XR250, XR100, XR50, rougly 550 lbs), wife, kid, gear, and luggage, around 14 mpg. Only mod. K&N drop in filter. Best mileage (no bikes in back, flatter roads), on trip to FL, around 18 mpg.
K&N does help (a little).
Also you can go below the last mark on the gauge, done it a few times, filled up over 22 gallons.
If you can get over 400 mile range on tank (22 gallons before refueling, 24 gallons total) you are doing pretty good.
I'd like to do better as well, as most travel is in city. Keeping foot out of it, helps a lot.
