Subject: Stupid Question IP: Logged
Message: OK is there any way to tell whether a gen2 has 3.55 or 3.90 rearend from the exterior? I have always checked by pulling the cover but if there was a faster way it would be helpful. I ask because I'm helping a friend look for a dakota and he wants the 3.90..thanks

Message: My Dak has a metal 'tag' under one of the differential coverbolts. The factory-installed ratio is embossed on that tag.

Message: Block the front wheels, put the truck in neutral, jack up the rear end, and start turning the wheels. By counting the number of revs of the drive shaft and dividing by the corresponding number of revs of the tire, you get your gear ratio. I would find a friend (preferably one who count past ten without taking off shoes), mark the drive shaft, turn the rear tire through 10 complete revs and have your friend/trained monkey count the revs of the drive shaft. Between 35 and 36 - 3.55, between 39 and 40 - 3.92, etc. You can go through fewer turns, but for example, by going through 5 revs on the tire, the difference between these two ratios is only two revs of the drive shaft - easy to miss if not paying attention, so I would leave it to a judgement call based on the intelligence of your friend.

Message: Thanks..
I was aware of the method that involved turning the rear tires but we were looking for a way to do this easily on vehicles that are for example, in a dealer lot. And they might frown upon us doing somehting like that out of curiosity.

Message: Block the wheels, hello?
As said, just look in the glove box at the specs sticker!
I guess you didn't order your truck with what YOU wanted?
