Subject: acceleration hesitation and oil consumpt IP: Logged
Message: Hi all. I have a '94 Dak 318-5 pd, 155,000 km. Under moderate acceleration I've experienced quick 'machine gun' like hesitations along with more than usual oil consumption (like 1-2 litres worth). The dealer has replaced the fuel pump twice and even though the problem isn't quite as bad I don't want to replace another pump (expensive, $400+).
Any thoughts appreciated.

Message: Oh, its you again with the sst. I thought you had it made with the 5 sp and suregrip. Metric user huh, must be in Canada or something? Well anyways, your fuel pump has little to do with oil consumption although they will make the truck hesitate if providing inadequate fuel pressure. The only remote way it could be related would be that your truck is running lean and this in return is slowly damaging the combustion chamber, rings, and head gaskets. Oil consumption usually points to worn valve guides in the head and sometimes worn rings. If you let it idle for quite a while and then blip the throttle, do you see blue smoke? If they are leaking a bit, I wouldn't worry about, just keeping driving it till it gets worse and then you can replace them when you rebuild the topend. Check for blowby too so you can make sure your gaskets and rings are holding well. Under moderate.....so it doesn't do it under full acceleration? Its definitely some time of miss but it could be cause by 101 things and without being there....there is no way to help rectify the situation.

Message: One or more of your spark plugs is likely oil fouled, causing a missfire. Pull the plugs to locate the affected cylinder(s). If it fouls plugs too quickly, you may need to fix the oil consumption problem. One thing to try is the next HOTTER spark plug in the heat range. This will help burn off contaminants. Like Jeremy said, you could have worn valve guides/seals, or the oil control rings are letting oil by. Extensive idling will reveal guides/seals by blue smoke out the tail pipe.

Message: your valley pan gasket is blown. open your TB and look down if you see puddles of oil, then have it changed.
