Subject: Electric fan tripping need help IP: Logged
Message: I have an 2000 Dakota with a 4.7l. The fuse for the electric fan blows within 30 seconds of being replaced after the fan turns on. My truck will get around 240 when I sit in traffic for any length of tims, so I am assuming I need the electric fan to operate. Also my check engine light came on yesterday, I am not sure what to do with that. How hard is it to change the tranny fluid? I have done it on a ranger before, but do I have to drain the torque convertor when I change the fluid?
Thanks
Dennis

Message: check your relay in the black box behind the battery. it is proably shorted. check for melting also. if it melts to much you might need to chang that box (power distribution center). the ck eng. lite is due to the fan not coming on.
you should check on how much it costs for a complete tranny flush. the torque convertor does not have a drain. at my dealership it's 139.95.

Message: I tries switching the relays around, but it didn't help. I think the fan might be bad, but it will come on for about 30 seconds until the fuse blows. I put a srew driver across the fuse terminal, and the fan will run, but it does seem to labor the engine and it heats up the screw driver tip.

Message: DON'T bridge the fuse with a screwdriver, or a penny or anything. All you are doing is allowing excessive current draw through the wiring, which WILL cause a meltdown and possibly a fire if TOO much current is being pulled through the wires. That's the whole purpose of a fuse, to protect the wiring from overheating. You need new fan. It's pulling too much amperage. A less likely scenario would be a shorted wire to ground, but that would blow the fuse instantly....so get a fan. DON'T use a heavier fuse!

Message: I have a 2001 QC 4X4 with the 4.7 and it is at the dealership right now because it was overheating while sitting at idle, especially with the AC on. When it would heat up above normal and you started to accelerate, you would hear a loud roaring from the engine bay and the truck would have distinctly less power. The service manager called me yesterday to let me know that the wiring harness to the cooling fan needed to be replaced, as it was not operating correctly. Thank goodness for warranty in this case, but I still have to wait a few days as they did not have the part and the service manager strongly discouraged driving the truck until the wiring harness was replaced. Sounds similar to your problem. Hope this helps.
