I just recently took my truck to the muffler shop for a cat back dual system quote on my 03' 4.7 and the guy told me that if I was going to supply the muffler then the case length had to be at least 18-20" long. Well, the flowmaster 40 has a 13" case length. Does this really matter? How is everyone else with 40's doing their mufflers?

the guys an idiot. the guys probably being lazy and just wants to use your stock pipes and swap out mufflers, tell him to extend your stock pipe on the cat side to compensate for the shorter flowmaster

I was looking t the system on my 2003 last night and there are 2 holders for the exhaust at that point. 1 is on the tailpipe about 3" after the muffler (great for jsut cutting one off and clamping the new one on, but the one on the front is welded to the muffler itself. is everyone jsut not using the one in fron when they swap mufflers or are you re-attaching it somehow?
And where are you geting SS tubing to patch in the gap between the new shorter muffler and the stock tubing?

I just had this done a week ago. I have a 03 4.7L and had mieneke take off the stock muffler and swap it with a flowmaster delta flow 40 series.( sounds great. ). He had to put a splice peice in that was about 12" long, but he put it behide the muffler. I was told later that he should have put it in front off the muffler(inbetween the muff and cat). Did'nt like the work they did but that might just be that shop. They also installed a ractive 2.5" to 3" stainless tip on it. Like I said it sounds great but I won't go back there again.

sully, the difference is not a big deal. I prefer my mufflers close to the cat or merge collector becuase they heat up faster and sound better. It's not a big deal. What's more important is putting it where it fits best.
If you all want to see a nice spot for muffler attachment go to my dodge truck world site and go to my exhaust section. In there will be some images of where to attach your exhaust.

got a convertor question for you. back on '01 my converter started making a rattling noise, like a ball bearing being shaken in a tin cup. That noise has since gone away but has been replaced by a duller clattering sound that changes with engine speed. At idle/cruising I can't hear it but the farther I press the gas the louder it gets. I can also hear it at a stop if I quickly rev the engine to about 5000rpm and let off the gas. Is it possible that the catalyst has broken loose inside the conveter shell and begins to rattle as exhaust gas flow rises???
Also, what do you think about cutting the pipe about 5" behind the cat, gutting the cat, welding a coupler onto the cut, and adding an 02 sensor simm to replace the rear 02 sensor.
any input will be greatly appreciated.
