Message: Thanks to someone out here I got the light to go out but the problem is still there. Also out here I found out how to check the code by watching the check engine light flash. Now maybe someone can tell me when the light will come back on so I can see what the code is or problem? Now it is only showing a 12 (battery was unhooked). (HELP)

Message: I have a 96 dodge dakota w/ 3.9 liter. It cuts out bad in lower gears or rpms and the engine light is on. I checked the codes and they are coming back 12 , 17 , 21, and of course 55. I know that 12 is battery has been diconnected and 55 is end of codes but what are 17 and 21 if anyone knows i would greatly appreciate the help.
thanks

From the guys @ Allpar
Code 17 Coolant sensor not reporting more than 160° after 8 minutes of engine running
Code 21 Oxygen sensor reporting too lean or too rich after 2 – 12 minutes with temp over 170° and RPM above 1500
Possible reasons for Code 17 on 1987 and later models
Thermostat stuck open - Replace the thermostat. When the engine doesn’t warm up the heater is usually far cooler than usual. To replace the thermostat remove the upper heater hose nipple or ‘thermostat housing’ bolted to the head. Clean both the head and thermostat housing of all old gasket and use a new gasket.
Defective Coolant Sensor - The sensor should measure 9,120 ohms to 10,880 ohms at 77 degrees F. For ’87 and later models, code will not also be set. It is possible that the sensor reading is not accurate, even though it is not out of range.
Possible Reasons for Code 21
Poor wiring or connections – Read the ‘How to troubleshoot drivability issues’. Connections from the O2 sensor and the ECU can cause code 21. Also a bad ground can contribute to the ECU not receiving the proper values from the O2 sensor.
Defective oxygen sensor – If the wiring is found to be good and Code 21 is still present then the O2 sensor should be replaced. The O2 sensor is located on the swing valve on turbo engines and on the exhaust manifold for non turbo engines. In both cases it’ll be found near the mounting flange for the down pipe. (Later cars, such as the Neon, used two oxygen sensors — one to test the results of the other.)
