Subject: 5.2l Magnum cylinder heads IP: Logged
Message: Have any of you replaced/installed new cylinder heads on a 5.2l Magnum engine? If so, what power gains were made, and was the change worth the money? I'm trying to determine if $800+ per cylinder head is worth it.

Message: If replacing your heads-- don't go with stock magnums -- go with RT heads (1.92 valve is what I run, non ported w/mild cam netted 35 rwhp increase, 20 ft. lbs.) for ~$1400 shipped.
You can go cheap, get bare castings, but heavier springs, and reuse your good valves to save some $$$ too.
I sell 'em anyway you want them.

Message: Sam, I'm going to pick your brain for a minute.
1) What are the main differences between the Magnum and R/T heads? I've been reading my handy-dandy Mopar Street Truck book, and the main point seems to be higher airflow over stock Magnum heads; this leads to my next question, what about Mopar ported Magnum heads with 1.97" intake/ 1.625" exhaust? Would they flow more or provide more gains than the 1.92" R/T heads?
2) Are the 2.02" intake R/T heads street legal, and if so, what are the pros and cons?
The stock cam will be replaced with a Mopar cam, .458/.467 lift and 260/264 degree duration. Other mods will be the Mopar headers and cold air intake. My truck is a daily driver, and I want to keep reliability and driveability while adding some power (to aid in active safety and cook a few ricers). Thanks for taking the time to explain this.

Message: don't bother with the 1.92, go for the 2.02, they flow better #'s stock than ported 1.92's... and $800 each is a little steep... you can find them bare for $400 each and build them with stainless valves for less than that... was that price including roller rockers? check with Hughes engines.com or KRCperformance.com they have descent prices.

Message: 2.02" intake R/T heads are good, yes? What gains can realistically be expected over the stock heads? I want to keep the truck streetable, as it is a daily driver.

Message: IMO, the 2.02 area little big for a daily driver that you want good streetability with. I have them on my R/T, and while they do provide better hp gains, they lose a lot more low end and gears and a 2400 stall converter are almost mandatory. Get the 1.92 or 1.97 Mopar R/T heads, and a cam from Sam. Don't use the Mopar cam. It's made for stock motors, and doesn't work well once you add the R/T heads. Sam can get you a good deal on the heads and a Crower cam. I woudl suggest some roller rockers while you are at it. UNless you have the proper tools, just buy the fully assembled ready to bolt on heads. From the right source, they aren't that expensive, and are worth the extra few dollars to have them ready to bolt on. You can get the complaete ported heads(not bare untouched) in the 1.92 or 1.97 cheaper than $800 each. I paid that much for my fully ported/polished 2.02 heads with 5 angle valve job shipped to my door from FL. Just listen to Sam, and send him a private email for prices and advice. He won't steer you wrong.

Message: Thanks for the info, HSKR. The heads are still up in the air; I may put on the other mods (cam, cold air intake, headers) and see where I stand. If I still want more power (likely), headers will be next.
I was checking my Mopar parts catalog, and the ported Magnum heads with 1.97" intake have a 153cc intake port volume & flow 230 cfm, where the 1.92" R/T heads have a 180cc intake port volume and flow 229 cfm. I'm just beginning to learn how these things work, so I apologize for the ignorance. I'm guessing that the flow is more important than the intake volume, so would ported Magnum heads be more streetable (I'm trying to get more low-end) and compatible with the Mopar cam? It's a little confusing because every book I read has slightly different figures for production heads, so I'm not sure what the stock heads are doing! Arrgh! *pop*

Message: I did some more researching, and I think I'm going to just go with a cam, cold air intake, and headers, then see how everything goes. I do a lot of stop-and-go driving, if that makes any difference.

Message: Looking at Magnum heads vs. RT heads-- the Magnum heads have a bad reputation because they crack between the valves. Very common. If you were looking to replace stock heads, go for 1.92 RT heads. Very streetable--- on a 5.2L they flow plenty, without being too much.
I can get you whatever you want parts wise.
Or try Marty at KRC (I am on the left coast, Marty is on the right) :)

Message: Thanks for all of your advice. That info about the Magnum heads is good to know. It would be great if I had another Dakota to mess around with, then I could get a Hemi engine and all sorts of goodies to try out. I'd need to find a way to put a ramcharger (with the vacuum-actuated hood scoop) on, just for some old-school attitude. Heh heh.
