Subject: Oxygen Sensor Need Help!!!! IP: Logged
Message: I have a 94 Dodge Dakota V8, I usually get very good gas Milage etc. My Original Oxygen sensor lasted a good time. Then I bought the Bosch Oxygen Sensor from regular Auto Part Stores, They have went bad and I had to Change it 3 Times in the last year. It ends up my truck only gets 10 miles to the gallon, Black smoke from exhaust from Running to Rich, Engine light and Code for Oxygen Sensor and Running to Rich. Question is anyone else have troubles with Oxygen Sensors? Or is this the Part? Id hate to buy 100.00 Oxygen Sensor from Dealer if that isnt the Problem!!

Message: Replace the sensor again and the have a 5-gas analyzer test on the exhaust, or other emmissions testing. This will tell you if a rich or lean engine condition is contributing to repeat failures of oxygen sensors.

Message: I second the cat converter. Does your truck have over 100K, or do you hear a rattle or buzz under the truck?
It could be anything, from a leaky fuel injector to bad belly pan gasket, to improper fuel additives, electrical malfunction (o2 heater system), bad coolant, MAP or TPS sensor etc. Running too rich, lead additives, other fuel system cleaners, burning oil, bad converter or too hot exhaust temp (lean) will burn up an o2 sensor.
I use the bosch O2 sensors in my '96 SLT V8 when I had the exhaust system replaced. I've only had one problem, a code 21 slow O2 response, that went away after I cleared the codes.
good luck

Message: Cat isnt clogged, but am getting a computer diagnostic done on it later today, just trying to see if anyone else had any ideas or same troubles that may have been simple to do and not do elimination Process, and save on the diagnostic service. Guess that might be my best bet then fix myself.

Message: Just been reading up on your oxygen sensor problems. Just wondering on how much a sensor runs? Machanic says that I need a new one! 180.00 including labour....just wondering if anyone has any say on whether that was too much!

Message: My bet is on the MAP sensor, making it run too rich, which will screw the 02 sensor, and eventually kill the cat.

Message: I dont have a cat on my truck, I took it off long time ago. Factory sensor ran forever with it gone. Could be effecting these other sensors. Computer diagnostic didnt come up with anything. Might have to get a different type of muffler.

Message: Scott - I replaced both of mine for $125 ('99 318). Bought Bosch's at Autozone. Bosch are the best, so it's not junk sensors that are causing hsd's problems.

Message: well it didnt show up on computer diagnostic test. What it does is the sensor gets stuck in lean position, then the computer tells it to give more fuel as it needs it, when it doesnt, so therefore starts running to rich so I will have two codes one telling me sensor stuck in lean position and that its running to rich.

Message: WHAT? $180 to replace an o2 sensor? do it yourself! buy the socket for $10 & buy the o2 sensor. 2 steps 2 changing it; disconnect wiring harness and use the socket 2 remove it. DONE! i wouldn't pay someone $180 2 change 1 spark plug on my truck & thats how simple of a job it is! remember 2 use "never cease" when installing the new 1

Message: Jp, Try removing your plugs and taking a look at their condition. You could have a bad plug or 2 that is fouling your sensor causing the CE light.

Message: Something important to note for some of you guy's.
My 2000 4.7 liter started running rich with black soot coming from the tailpipes, also some O2 sensor codes came up.
The problem was not directly the sensor, but the power steering line pressure switch. It blows and leaks fluid into the wiring harness, down to the drivers side pre-cat O2 sensor and fouls it.
The PS pressure switch was about 20.00 from the dealer, cleaned up the harness and wires with some electrical cleaner, replaced the fouled O2 sensor.
Took me about a week to figure out but problem solved. Sounds crazy but true.
