Message: i don't know if there are any plans on it getting into the dakota...but just wait for the 5.7L that engine is gonna be so awesome...and lets just pray that it will be possible to get it in the quad cabs as well as the R/Ts. (roughly 350-375hp and the same in torque...WOW!)

Message: What can I do in increase the mileage on my 2000 Dakota Sport 4X4? I have a 4.7 Litre with 31,150 kms. I drive exclusively highway and the best I have averaged is 15.7 miles per gallon. (and that was with a tail wind).

Message: Dodge won't put the H.O. 4.7L into the Dakota because RT sales would drop to almost zero. I say get rid of the gas guzzling pushrod 5.9L and place the H.O. 4.7L into the RT and watch all the other performance trucks tremble with fear! Except maybe the Lightning...

Message: I would welcome to see the HO 4.7 in the Dakota but doubt it would be any faster then the current R/T. The HO 4.7 is not availiable with a manual, and wouldn't be even if they offered it in the Dakota. The strongest Dakota 5-speed is not rated to handle the input torque of the HO 4.7 (let alone a 5.9). It would be very close to a current 5.9 R/T, maybe a little faster but not much without the help of a 5-speed. Torque is improtant in something that weighs 4000 pounds. Just look at the new mercury Marauder. It is pushing over 300 HP with similar weight and gearing to a R/T but is running at best 15.4 1/4 mile (and I've heard of a few tests well into the 16's). The new Grand Cherokees with the HO 4.7 are not faster then the 5.9 limiteds either (although the Overlands are a few hundred pounds heavier.) So I think the HO 4.7 in a Dakota would be a good replacement for the 5.9, but don't think it will be any faster. They really just need to drop the 5.7 hemi in there and be done with this argument.

Message: Viable replacment yes but would be much better with a 5 speed. Be nice if they could cut the weight of the dakotas as well.

Message: CW, you know very well what would happen if people demanded they cut the weight of the Dakota.
First solution, would be to find alternative materials that are lighter, but are as strong or stronger. This of course increases the cost of the vehicle. Would it be enough to maybe put it in a different market, I don't know, but a possibility. Are people willing to pay the extra money for it? I don't know, but I bet some people at Dodge know.
Second solution, they would go to a lighter material and maintain the same product cost. There is no way in hell you can go to a lighter and stronger material and pay the same price. Obviously this would make our trucks weaker, less ridgid, and their life would be sortened.
Can't get a lighter vehicle for free. So much worry about gas economy now, but no one realises it's not the vehicles that are the problem it's the price on gas.
Not doggin' on ya CW, just throwing about some ideas.

Message: Wayne,
I have a 01 4.7 QC. Just took a trip to Houston TX. to Panhandle of Florida and back for a sailboat race. I pulled my catamaran sailboat on Interstate 10 at about 75-85 mph. I got 15-16mph!
I don't know what you're doing, but I get about 20mph on the highway, without my boat of course.

Message: Texas Todd,
THATS AWSOME!!!!
I know catamaran's don't weigh much but thats really good! I own a J-24 and do a lot of traveling with it. Boat, trailer, sails, gear all weigh around 5,000lbs.
My gas mileage before the new air-intake was about 8-9mpg. After the air-intake it increased to around 10-11mpg.
What mods have you done that may contribute to your high mpg when trailering?
