Subject: P/S Flush and Bleeding Brakes IP: Logged
Message: I have almost 100K on my 00 Dak and it's time to replace all the fluids. Does anyone know of the proper procedure to flush out the P/S pump and rack and pinion unit. I am going to use Amsoil ATF and don't want to waste alot of fluid as it's $7-8.00 a quart.
Also, is there anything tricky about bleeding the ABS brakes on Dak's. I have heard that some vehicles need to be connected to a computer to bleed the brakes correctly. Do the Dak's need to be connected to a computer, or is it the old standard brake bleeding procedure for non-ABS brakes.
Thanks,
DW

Message: never done the power steering but for the brakes I use a vacuum pump to suck the fluid through the lines, this will help purge the booster some... if you really want to clean out the booster, push the pedal to the floor and you should feel the ABS pulse, this will clean everything out but will take some time to rebleed... dak's don't need a computer to bleed them. On the Amsoil, did you pay the $10 for the prefered cust discount? I ordered 5 gal of ATF and it saved me some serous $$$

Message: What kind of vaccum pump did you use? I have one from Harbor Freight for AC work, never got the chance to use it. Guess I could hook the VP up to a container and run a hose from the container to the bleeders.
Have not purchased Amsoil ATF yet, was going to see if I could get it locally at about the same price. How much did it run you for the 5 gal and shipping. Thier website says a 15-20% discount for preferred members, was it 15 or 20% on the ATF. Was the shipping reasonable $$$.
