Subject: remove cats? IP: Logged
Message: had a question for any of you 4.7 gurus out there. i am in the process of installing JBA firecone headers on my 4.7 and i was debating whether or not to remove all 3 of the cats while i was at it. also i have the 40 series flows and wondered if removing the cats would increase or decrease performance.

Message: removing the cats definately helped my 5.9 dak but the flowmaster didnt do much except for the awesome sound. wat im wondering is if u put the y-pipe more towards the front or back of the truck if it will change the sound. I found it easier to put the y-pipe after the crossmember on the frame but it doesnt sound as good for some reason so im wondering if i move it towards the front more if it will sound better?

Message: Did you know that D-C designed the 4.7 exhaust manifolds to flow within 2 percent of headers? Let us know if you can tell a difference, blackv8dak. Be sure you keep the oxygen sensor loop. Unless your engine is highly modified, removing all the converters may reduce the backpressure too much. A cat-back system is adequate on most stock engines.

Message: yeah thats weird. i didn't think the placement of the y pipe would affect the sound. but you are correct about the flows. my truck sounds mean as hell with dumps and hopefully even better after i get done with the headers. i know removing the cats will give it a more metallicy sound but i don't wanna lose to much torque. as far as my y pipe it is right up front just a little behind the oil pan and i suppose i'll just leave it there.

Message: yeah i had to cut off the precats to get the headers to fit in there. gay. but other than that all is well. had to drive up to the exhaust shop with open headers to get my muffler reconnected. oh yea.
