Subject: Imroved mpg on 4.7l IP: Logged
Message: I thought I was seeing things, but I went from a consistent mpg in the low 14's to upper 15's. I've owned my 02 QC since new, and have checked mpg on every fill up. It always hangs @ 14.2-14.5 until I took it in for the 15k service at the dealer. The service included cleaning/adjusting the trottle body which I nearly didn't do but was convinced to by my servive advisor. Ever since, with no change in driving habits, I'm easily getting high 15's now. I'm not sure what all is involved with this throttle body adjustment, but for those of you looking to improve your milage, this may be a good place to start.

Message: I am pretty sure there is no adj. on the throttle body, they just put an agressive cleaner down the throat of the throttle body to clean the butterfly and throat of any carbon buildup. I had the BG throttle body clean done at 30000 miles and personally didn't see much of a difference (probably because I have put AMSOIL PI cleaner in the gas every 3000 miles) but after seeing that all they did was spray the BG cleaner down the throat under pressure, I did it myself at 60000 miles with spray Gumout for fuel injected cars, might have worked even better, but good chance it could have been my imagination.

Message: One trick that my favorite Mopar mechanic told me was to spray the carb/tb cleaner on the throat, then stretch a light rag, like an old t-shirt, over your index finger, and swab the inside of the throttle body as far as you can reach while holding the butterfly open. You won't believe how much you can remove that the spray cleaner alone misses. I do this about every 20,000 miles.

Message: Great points about cleaning. The thing is, I bought my truck NEW and my milage hasn't varied more than 1/2 mpg until this service was done. Now it's up 1 to 1 1/2 mpg. It doesn't seem like much, but now I fill up @ 350 miles/tank as opposed to @300.

Message: Be careful with throttle body adjustments. Often, tampering with a throttle body is similar to tampering with a cat. converter...the EPA does not like that idea.

Message: You can't adjust the 4.7L TB (unless you consider opening it up/boring it out an adjustment).

Message: There is also an idle speed adjstment on it, but I wouldn't think it would have much effect on mpg - remember, this is where the engine gets its air from, not the fuel, so no lean or rich adjustments here.

Message: Is he refering to the throttle possitioning switch? If so, all it does is tell the pcm where the throttle starts. Its like a carb linkage but with wire signals instead of linkage.

Message: Mileage a month age was about 17-18 highway. Just went through and performed some minor tuneup stuff, changed plugs, cleaned K&N and throttle body. I also when through and changed oil, ATF, gear lube and brake fluid to synthetics.
Topped off the truck this morning and hit the road. When I filled it back up for the trip home the trip meter read 199.6 miles and the gas pump read 10.02 gallons. Thats almost 20 MPG. Guess the tune up and synthetisc are going to pay for themselves.
