Subject: 2003 tranny ?? IP: Logged
Message: My 2003 with 5 speed auto with 4K miles sometimes labors (can't think of a better word) when first started in the morning or when cold. Lots of noise and the truck doesn't want to move until fluid starts circulating/warms up..it goes away after a few blocks. Also, - it makes a clicking noise for about 5 seconds when put in reverse -that goes away too. Does anyone else's do that? Is it normal - cause it doesn't do it all the time./

Message: You mean that it sounds like your engine is winded? Like a lot of air in the engine. Does it seem sluggish for about a minute? Yeah, it happens to me too sometimes in my 02 Dak. Usually, I just keep on accelerating until it goes away. Don't know what causes it.
How is the new five speed tranny by the way. I have the four speeds and it doesn't shift right sometimes. It won't downshift when needed. It will stay stuck in third or fourth gear which makes me lose off-the-line speed. Hate it when that happens. Next time I am getting a manual.

Message: Most auto trannies will have problems when running cold. this is why most canadian mech. recommend warming up a vehicle for at least 10 minutes, even if the engine is warm... There are 2 things that Kill auto trannies, heat (which is why you want a tranny cooler), and cold running.
Let your tranny warm up, accelerating till its hot puts alot of wear on your tranny and will burn it out fast.
We all know dodge trannies (the autos anyway) have sucked, hopefully they'll be fixed or replaced by diamler's trannies, but untill then be easy on them for the sake of your wallet.

Message: the clicking is normal too, its the shifting selenoid... the sluggishness is the viscosity of the fluid being thick and all in the pan.
Mine is the same, at 3600 miles

Message: Don't think it's the tranny -- Try removing your clutch fan and see if it still does it.

Message: I have a 00 Dak CC 4.7 with the 45RFE auto trans. I bought it with 60K and it has a similar problem. When its been sitting over night it will not move as soon as it's started. It takes about 5-10 seconds for the tranny to move the truck properly.
From what I have found on this board, the torque converter will leak down when it has been sitting for an extended period of time, and it takes several seconds to fill it back up. I have put over 30K one the truck since I bought it and have not noticed the problem changing, or the tranny developing any other problems, so I would assume that it's not doing any damage. But I let the tranny fill the torque converter before I drive it.
Oh Yeah, it does not do it all the time, it might do it for a couple of days and the next couple of days it's normal. I guess there is something in the trans (seal, valve) that causes this to happen intermittantly. Your guess is as good as mine.
If it's under warranty make Dodge fix it.

Message: hey does that noise sound kind of like you have a fan in your engine bay attached to your serpentine belt and it's adding drag to your engine?...cause i got that problem too...
