Subject: Bouncing Idle Trouble. IP: Logged
Message: Just bought a used '96. Well, when I first bought it, the idle would spontaneously bounce. Sometimes it would do it, sometimes not. When the idle bounces it used to run between 500-1000 RPM. Best I can describe it is if you held one end of a slinky and allowed it to bounce, that was roughly the rate at which the idle would bounce. Finally, might just be me, but seemed to occur more often in the cool (52F) of the morning. It would also sometimes die.
Took it to a dealer and they replaced the Idle actuator (AIS) and re-flashed the computer with upgrades. Now, for the most part the it idles right on 650 RPM. However it will still bounce (now only 630-670 or so) on occasion. It never dies now (phew), but I still find it troubling. This might just be me too, but it seems that I can help it not to happen by starting the truck and not immediately putting it into gear (give it 10-30 seconds). Also if I need to break hard, it seems as though it causes to start. Last idea I had was breaking hard when it's adjusting from high idle to normal.
One other small problem with the truck (which may or may not be related). Sometimes when I get in and turn the ignition, all the power comes on but no ignition. The suggestion was made that the break needs to be pressed, but one time that did no good either. It took about thirty seconds of pressing the brake, turning the ingition off and back on, shifting to neutral and back to park, etc. before it finally went.
Thank you if you've taken the time to read this and THANK YOU if you have the answer. Outside these problems the truck is sweet! Just want to eliminate the bugs so I can really enjoy it!

Message: My V8 '96 Dak would do this when the O2 sensors were on their way out. Clean the throttle body with some SynPower spray and then change both O2 sensors. Also check your coolant temp sensors or Intake air temp sensor, if equipped.
On your no-start problem, check the adjustment of your neutral safety switch. Sometimes my truck won't start unless I push the shifter further into PARK, then the switch closes and it starts.
Good luck

Message: you may have a vacuum leak on you exhaust gas recirculating tube, try to tighten the bolt on the back of the manifold a bit.
When your truck does not start try to start it in nutral. Mine does the same thing sometimes, try to get into the habit of realy making sure it is in park all the way. good luck

Message: The mystery of power but no ignition is solved. When I push it further in to park, no problem, fires right up. Phew, that's one down.
Now, the bouncing idle. I did replace the 02 sensors on the weekend of the 4th, so it's been about 10 days now. The bouncing is still there, runs better, but still bounces.
I'll try wadak and janesy's suggestions next, and post how it goes.
Also want to say thanks. I really appreciate the suggestions. Really digging learning more about my truck too! Thanks again for all the help!

Message: Yeah let me know whats involved with cleaning the IAC motor. I'll look in my manual for the location of the EGR tube. After you do the work, try resetting the computer see if that makes any differance.

Message: Was just thinking, and thought this might trigger some thinking too. If it is bouncing (say I'm at a stop light) and I shift it to neutral, turn the ignition off and then on again, shift back to drive (all before the light turns green) the bouncing will disappear (sometime reappearing after more travel, but not while I sit idle). Just another clue.
