the magnum engines didnt change much at all over the years. but, 91 was not magnum. it did have crappy azz horsepower.

Message: I recently acquired a 91 Dakota 2WD. I own an auto repair shop and I have been a mechanic since the age of 12. I'll be 50 on 6/25/06.
I'm just curious about the rear axles on these. I need a limited slip or a lock up on mine since I seem to be eating the right rear tire away quite rapidly. It has the 10" drum brakes. I'm not sure of the axle ratio at this time even though the truck is sitting just outside right now. (I'm in the middle of a 12 pack and don't want to check the list.)
I'd also like to know what year the roller cam block began because I happen to have one available. If it's already in this one, I'd rather not tear it down, but...if not, it's in line for a bit of an upgrade...Including tuned port injection vs. throttle body crap...Headers vs. cast iron exhaust restriction manifold crap, etc.
Any knowledgeabe response will be appreciated.

Message: The 318 bro is a strong engine though. I have saw people build it and have dynosheets stating that the 318 is putting out more than thet Dodge Viper V10 when it is stock. Yes, it takes a LOT of money, but it's possible. The 318 in my opinion is one of the best truck engines ever made.

Message: I'm new here. I was just wanting to add to trevor here that you can make a Gen II Dakota insanely fast if you have the time and money with a 318.... we have a couple at our local track that match high-performance ford mustangs. I'm talking about SVT power too.

Message: Gene, the Mopar becane a phase-in of roller cams in 1985. Initially, it was the 318 car engines, then progressing to the trucks. The 360 was generally a year behind the 318 in these transitions. Your 1991 has a roller. You have a couple choices on induction. If you want Multi-port injection, you can opt for a package from Edelbrock. Or, you can use 1992 or newer Magnum top-end....heads, intake, etc. The 1992 cast iron exhausts are rare, but outflow all other Mopar smallblock cast irons, even the vaunted exhaust used with the 340 Magnum. Lots of header options. The stock roller cam with 1.5:1 rockers is the same cam profile as all prior 318 cams...meaning very small.

Message: Thanks for the info Gen1Dak. You would think I should know that, but I deal with a hell of a lot of vehicles. That one got by me.
How about the diffy though? Can I use the gears from a 4X4 to get a limited slip or a posi, or is it like the S-10s with different widths for a 4X4 and different spline size? I don't like the options for aftermarket "Lockers", etc. I'd rather keep it OE. Thanks, Gene
