Message: I have a 97 dak 4x4 with the 5.2, whenever i step on it from a stop it takes off real well but once it gets around 5 grand it starts to "buck". what is this? is my cat cuasing this? or is it the rev limiter? if its the rev thats wierd, it limits before it even hits redline. if its the cat is there a way to clean it out or do i need a new one? or is soemthing else causing it to "buck"

Message: Hey Mag,
I've got the same situation going on with mine. I get the same "Bucking" around 5 grand myself. I have been told by more people than not it is the cat. I will let you know when I find more out about the Rev Limiter. I'm just taking the damn cat out and putting a straight pipe in but I also live in Michigan where there is no emissions control or checking stations... Check out the comments in the replys I got under "Straight Pipe vs Cat Convertor in the message boards. Should be in the top five.
Hope this helps.

Message: This is the rev limiter. My 2000 5.9 did this. Some say replace the governor pressure sensor and solenoid and it will fix it. Mine eventually burned up in 32,000 miles. It did this bucking problem for about 6 months, then it went a week with no first gear, then first came back and it shifted from 1-3, no second, for about 3 months. The dealer could never duplicate complaint after 9 times to the dealer for the same problem. It finally burned up, and wouldn't even roll. It welded the torque converter to the pump. The bucking is caused by the fuel shutoff at the rev limit. Mine redlined at 5,400, but it would cut-out at 5,000-5,200. I didn't do all the time either. I knew if it wound over 5,000 it wouldn't shift. Stand on it from a stop and let it wind out, as soon as it hits the rpm that your experiencing this at, let up for a second and see if it shifts. If so, I would say the tranny is your problem. Do something about it now or you will be in for a lot of trouble. My factory rebuilt tranny cost the dealer $3,000. Hope this helps.

explains how to test to see if its the rev limiter....I deal with this all the damned time...it really pisses me off. I have a steady 6.4 0-60mph time, but it drops to almost 8.8 with the rev limiter problem. theres a fuel cutoff at 5300 rpm, to save valvetrain damage. they were supposed to have corrected this issue on ALL post 98 trucks, but it still happens. the only true way to eliminate it is to either change your computer to a performance module, or buy another device, I think KRC performance sells it, that also removes that pesky 115mph cutoff, its for when you change tire sizes, since the speedo is computer controled.
other issues include corrupted ignition system, and a poor tranny, but most of the tranny probs I 've heard of are on trucks with over 100k miles on em.

Message: Definately rev limiter. After market chips turn it off but them you are on your own if you over rev.
