Message: So I just got my Dodge Dakota Sport with the 5.2 in it. I really want a good exauset so I decide to go with Flowmaster 40s, the only thing is that do I go catback and skip worrying about the Check Engine light or do I cut the cats and do the whole exauset over. How will it affect the sound if I leave the cats in?

Message: I don't know if the 5.2 is any different that the 5.9 which i have...but i will try to tell you a little bit of what i know. If you just go with a cat-back set up...you will not have any sevice engine soon light come on. The only reason why it would is IF you took the cats out and didn't do anything with the 02 sensors. The 02 sensors watch the air going out of the coverters and if there is a problem with the convers the light will come on...which is why they would come on if the coverter wasn't there. If you decided to remove the cats...you would need to get a cat-box to over-ride the sensors...then no light. Now about the sound...i don't know if there would be much difference. Hope this helps.

Message: yes if u are gonna cut the cats off u must get the o2 simm. i did this on my r/t. i got gibson headers and removed all 3 cats and the biggest sound change came from removing the cats. i still have the stock exhaust but removing the cats made it louder and deeper.

Message: While removing the cats is illegal, the gains are pretty good (both sound and power).

Message: I have a 93 dakota 5.2. I installed a mike leach
cat back system and doug thorely headers.
the power gains were great and the engine
smoothed out a ton. I think you can find mike
on the internet. All CA smog legal. Oh and you
might want to install a high-flow cat.
