Subject: 5.2 Running Rich/Mis-firing IP: Logged
Message: Ive got 99 4x4 5.2 CC, and my exhaust "sputters". (don't know how else to put it). I sorta pulses when you put your hand by it, and it has a lot of liquid coming out of it. So I had my buddy who owns an automotive shop bring up a little computer and we hooked it up to the truck and it says that my truck is always running rich, and it is misfiring as well. Is this my 02 sensor? I need some help and would liek to get this fixed. Has this happen to anybody else?
Thanks
Jason

Message: First check your TPS voltage. http://www.speedtweaks.net/ has instructions on it. If your TPS is on target then replace O2 sensors. Good luck!

Message: Thanks for the help guys, will check that out today. But I am in the right though correct? The pressure coming out of the exhaust should be steady and not pulsing right? And the engine running rich would cause a lot of moisture too right?
Thanks again

Message: a correctly firing and running engine should produce condensation, which will result in water coming out, that is perfectly ok, if you notice alot of new cars do this all the time, and yes your exhaust should pulsate, because as your crank turns and your cylinders and valves open and close there will be a slight pause before the next cycle of exhaust is released from the engine, sounds like your truck is running well, and if any sensors go bad your check engine light will come on, thats the point of it, well one of them, hope this helps and unless your getting like 10mpg or lower i dont think your running rich, and you would know if its miss firing because you can hear it, it sounds horrible, hope this helps

Message: sometimes the check engine light does no come on all the time if something goes bad. it depends on how it goes bad. i've checked vehicles with a bad O2 and the check engine didn't say anything about a o2 sensor. If at an idle your truck is not running good and has black smoke coming out the tailpipe it's running too rich. You should be able to look at the o2 sensor on a scan tool and it should fluctuate. If you have acces to a computer use it. I work at a dealership and computers make it MUCH easier. I would put my money on the o2 sensor cause mine did the same thing as well as a friend of mines.

Message: See the thing is, which I forgot to mention, no only is the pulsating a little wierd (or so I am told), but the truck sounds like it is gasping for air. Sorta like its out of breathe, I cant really describe it. Anybody understand that one? hehe
Thanks again

Message: HOw long you had the truck and what mods? I can say this for sure If you have a mopar pcm or the IAT mod done youwill start seeing more black water coming from the exhaust. As far a missing. The 5.2's have a pretty good size cam ( RV ) , and they usually sound like it is missing. If you have your hands on the steering wheel, you can feel the little thuds of the cam hitting mean licks. Hope this helps.
I did the O2 swap and noticed no difference when I was doing the same thing. Save your money.

Message: if your 02 sensor is bad, and its running rich, that can cause your cat to get clogged. this may be the case... have you checked it out?

Message: This weekends I think I am gonna check the cat out as well. My friend has an interesting way to do it and I want to know if any of your people have tried this.
He wants to drill two holes on either end of the cat and check the amount of pressure in there. If the pressure is way high on one side, then that must mean that it is being clogged. He told me the amount of pressure that is suppose to be in there, but I cant remember off the top of my head...
Any other suggestions?
