Subject: Straight Pipe vs Cat. Converter

Hey all,

Now I know that were not supposed to do this but my Cat.Convertor is plugged. If I just cut it out and replace it with just a straight pipe with this hurt the vehicle? Is there anything that I need to know or any suggestions before I do this. Let me know.

Thanks,

Geoffrey

I removed mine on my 02 Dak 4.7. If you have to pass state inspection you probably won't make it. We don't have to have state inspections in Florida anymore. If the dealer catches you he will probably not honor any emission control failures.

Yeah we don't have any emissions testing in Michigan either so I don't think it will be a big problem... The only thing I'm worried about are the O2 sensors before and after the Cat. Will this affect them and will I get a check engine light from removing it?

Thanks,

G.

My Dak had the 3 cat setup, so I just had the 3rd or last cat removed. It did not have any sensors around it, so no problems. The sensors are before and aft the precats upstream.

See I have the "2" O2 sensor setup (I Believe!). One before the Cat and the other aft of it. I guess I will have to wait to see what happens... I have read a lot of posts and I hear different things... I just hope that I don't get that damn "Check Engine" Light...

What I'm trying to do is get rid of the "bucking" that it does when I floor it on the highway and that is due to the cat being bad. It will get up to 5000 RPM and instead of dropping back down or keep speeding up it "Bucks" or "Jerks"... I just want that gone...

Thanks,

G.

if your truck is pretty new the dealer should cover replacing your cat for free, i think they have to or something to keep emissions good, i think i heard that somewhere

Geoffrey, I think that "bucking" is your rev. limiter. I had a cat go bad on my '97 4x4 5.2L, I just removed it and welded in a straight pipe. I have had no problems since then. I gained a lot of power by getting rid of the cat, although it made my 40 series flowmaster a HELL of a lot louder!!

Hey Rnaz,

Thanks for the info... I plan to take the cat off this weekend. I was just wondering the Rev Limiter where is that located and is it a hard thing to replace? As for the Flowmaster... I just have a stock muffler.. I'm sure that will be a hell of a lot louder as well!

Thanks, for the input and let me know about that limiter.

I've heard of a few people getting away with dumping the cat and not having problems with the check engine light, but most do...

To cure the situation; Cut the cat, leave the front o2 sensor in it's stock location, and get a KatBox(KRC Performace) or a o2 SIM from casperselectronics.com. Put the KatBox or SIMM in place of the rear o2 sensor, and it will keep the check engine light from coming on. It will also keep the truck from bucking like a wild horse.

Thanks for the heads up... I really don't have the funds to be purchasing a Simm or KATBOX. That's one of the reasons I'm just going to cut the cat out of the system. I just hope that I don't get a check engine light. Oh well, I guess we will see. I will let everyone know how it goes...

If anyone has any hints or suggestions before taking it out let me know. I plan at first just cutting it out and then putting the straight pipe on with U-Bolts. If I can find someone to weld it in place I will that afterwards.

Thanks,

Geoff

104042 O2 SIM single MOPAR

This plug-in Simulator is designed to eliminate the SES codes associated with the post-cat sensor on Mopar vehicles 1996-2000. ***SENSOR MUST HAVE ROUND BLACK CONNECTOR AS SHOWN IN IMAGE***Plugs in, and rear sensor can be removed from the vehicle. Used on single-cat systems. FOR OFF-ROAD USE only.
Price: $59.00

$59 bucks is a pretty cheap price to pay for some insurance. It will also not only keep the check engine light off, it will keep the front sensor from seeing a lean condition with the air temps, and dumping more fuel to compensate...Thus a rich situation, and poorer mpg's/surging.

I would get the part, and then take the hacksaw to the cat.

Mine ran like the poo without it.

You have to do something about the 02 sensor because if i'm not mistaken the check engine light throws off the timing(??). For those of you who do not have state inspection...very lucky. As far as the dealership is concerned, and they dont tell you this, but they will replace a catalytic convertor up to 75K miles. Its true, go read your manual's fine print. At least mine does.

Hey, 00287RC, As far as I know, the check engine light for a lean/rich condition has nothing to do with the timing. After I cut out my cat, I would get a check engine light intermittantly, but it never would stay on. As of right now, I haven't seen it in at least 6 months. I cut out the cat about 2.5 years ago.

would there be any reason to go with the katbox over the sim for a single cat removal? $89vs$59

Hey Geoffrey, your rev-limiter is in your PCM (power control module). I recommend changing your PCM with a Mopar Performance unit. They are more reliable than a JET piece of *#@*! I put one in my old Kota (I've had 5 Kota's). A buddy of mine has a '99 R/T, he went thru 3 JET pieces, before he listened to me. He finally, put a MP unit in & he's had NO trouble since...that was 2 years ago.
In my '94 Kota, the MP unit actually raised my redline, from 4800-5000, to around 6000!!!!! I KNOW!!! I was at the track, did a burnout, went to hit 2nd (not realizing I was in Drive), & threw it into neutral, the tach read PAST 6000 RPM's!!!
It did NOT hurt the motor at all. In fact, another buddy of mine has THAT Kota now.
Here's a tip I found on '94-'96 Dakotas, with the 318's with the OLD style breathers, follow the stock air intake tube, from the round style breathers, to the radiator support. Take the grille off the truck, then, remove the flat flap, from in front of the air intake tube. I took a pair of pliers & yanked mine off. Then, take a piece of window screen, cut it just bigger than the tube diameter, place it over the tube, then put a zip-tie around it (it will keep bugs & etc. from getting into the breather), then, reinstall the grille, & install a K/N filter in the round breather. The difference it made on my '94 was DAY & NIGHT. A whole lot more responsive. Seemed to have VERY good take off, & more responce from 40-80 mph!!!

Hey guys,

Just wanted to update everyone on the work I did this weekend... Took out the cat and had a piece of pipe welded into place... It's running awesome! "NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS AT ALL CAME ON!!!!!" One more time.... "NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS CAME ON!!!" Now I can't say that this will be the same for everyone.. But Just in the last few days I have seen a small increase in power and a huge increase in gas milage. It seems to be running alot smoother as well.

Just to let anyone know... I have a friend who works at a car place (i.e. Muffler Man, Tuffy, etc...) That is going to put on a low profile muffler for me... Kinda looks like a Cherry Bomb/Glass Packs but is actually a muffler with dual output and is going to run dual exhaust pipes for me.. And get this.. All for $150 bucks... Not bad I don't think... If any one lives close to Holland, Michigan or Grand Rapids, Michigan area let me know and I will hook you up... He said that he will give people I know a deal if I send them his way... This will be on the side if you know what I mean....

Any comments?

Thanks for all you help on this issue guys!!

Geoffrey

Geoffrey, go with a Flowmaster single in, single out, the dual out style of muffler robs a little bit of power. I have a single in, single out 40 series on my Dak, with Edelbrock headers, and the power increase is pretty good.
