Message: According to my display, and some rough calc's based on miles traveled and gallons, I get about 12mpg city and 17mpg hwy. The 17mpg is when I'm on cruise at about 80, and the rpm's not fluctuating much (i.e. flat roads).

Message: I figured they sucked the gas, but that's to be expected with a 360. I just want to know if it's bad enough that I'll regret buying it. That's why I'm asking you guys because yall know how the R/T does.
Thanks

Message: I calculate mine every time I fill it up and it's almost always between 13 and 14 mpg... 13.75 is about what it averages out to. Mostly city driving with a small amount of highway driving between home and work.

Message: Ksmoke,
These trucks are quick off the line, but you won't be chasing any late model mustang GT's, G37's, or Hemi Charger/Challengers without some upgrades.
There's nothing special about the R/T. The 5.9L that's under the hood is mechanically the same as the one under grandpa's 2500 Ram. The ECU is a little different with more timing advance which is why you have to run Premium. This engine doesn't have enough compression to run properly on 93 octane. The extra timing the R/T ECU computer has actually hurts the performance.
A friend of mine swapped the 5.9L out of a Quad Cab Dakota and stuck it in a 2000 X-cab. With the stock 3.55 gears and no modifications to the engine we took it to the track and he consistantly beat me by 1 to 2 truck lengths. The only difference between his 5.9L and mine is the ECU in his truck is programmed to match an engine producing low end torque and doesn't try to get an extra 500 RPM at the shift points. The 5.9 does not work well beyond 4,800 RPM and the R/T ECU tries to stretch it out to 5,200 RPM. It doesn't work.
In fact, a stock 92-98 318/5.2L will out run the 5.9L R/T. I know this because I've owned a 92 V8, 93 V8, 94 V8, 98 R/T, & a 2000 R/T Dakotas. The R/T's look good and handle a lot better. That's about it.
Save a couple of thousand and get a 1998-1999 with the 318. It will out perform the 360 in stock form (unless your pulling a trailer) and it will get better gas mileage.

Message: You guys are all doing it wrong. I have a 99 r/t and I have a
cold air intake and a cat back exhaust I get around 17 mpg in
the city and about 22 on the highway. Pushing almost 350hp
to the rear tires. And you can push late model mustangs trust
me I know from experience
