Subject: O/D cancel switch IP: Logged
Message: My Overdrive switch on my 92 Dakota stuck in the off/cancel position, so it wouldn't shift to OD. Took the switch out and now it shifts but should I spend the 43 bucks the dealer wants for a new switch, go with a plain ol' toggle from the NAPA or do I even need it???? Don't tow and I don't live in the mountains so...??? Thanks for any input.

Message: You definitely need some way to keep it from shifting into OD. As far as the type of switch, its up to you? How do you want it to look?

Message: Scott,
You can not use a toggle switch, you need what is called a momentary contact switch. When you push the button it sends a signal to the PCM to disengage if you are in overdrive or to engage if you are out of overdrive.

Message: That's in case you want to turn the overdrive off; like for towing or when the tranny is hunting gears.
Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Message: I have a 1992 dakota and when I got the truck the overdrive worked but the lockout switch wouldn't work, after about a week the overdrive just quit working so I had it checked out and the fluid changed and I replaced the switch and it still doesn't have overdrive and the switch won't light up if I push it. It has power to the two blue wires on the switch but it doesn't light up when you turn it on. The little o/d lights up when I turn the headlights but that is all. HELP PLEASE..
