When the dealer does the tranny service, fluid/filter change, they replace ALL the fluid with the special machine like Jiffy Lube? If the dealer is charging like $150 to do it, I would hope that it is being totally changed out, not just what's in the pan. THanks.

That is what they did at my dealer...a complete flush of the tranny with a special machine. They showed me all the crap coming out of the tranny too. It made a big difference in how my trans shifted too, so I was pleased.

Special machine??? I haven't changed mine yet (only 3600 miles) but I thought all you had to do was drop the pan and replace the filter. and refill of corse. $150 WOW

my friend owns a shop and has the machine it is cool!he just flushed my durango the only cost to me was the $75. for 3 gals of atf +4 .i recommend doing it the durango has 30,000 miles on it and the fluid wasn't as red as the new and the trucks shifts so smooth now!

clevite77, when you just drop the pan and change the filter you are only changing about 4-5 quarts. the rest of the fluid is used and dirty. with the evacuator machine it cleans and conditions all your seals and you change all the fluid in the entire system. I had a ram that did not want to shift freely from 2nd to drive, dealer said they would have to rebuild back section of trans. 1500.00 local garage charged me 100.00 to clean the system worked just like new afterwards.

dudes,
okay thats cool with Jiffy Lube sucking out the thingy, but do they change the trans filter too?
last question if there is only like 4 quarts in the pan how much left behind in the tranny?
also what would you all recommend for changing the tranny filer? every time i change the fluid? cause as far as i know Jiffy Lube doesn't change the tranny filter.
any help is appreciated.

Yes, your filter should be changed each time. If you want JiffyLube to do it, try taking a new filter with you and see if they can change it out when they service your transmission. Just like on your motor oil, you should replace the filter with each fluid service. Good luck. I will be in Kaneohe on May 17. I am looking for a second home there.

So if I understand correctly- you should do BOTH every time you service the tranny...
I.E.: Flush the entire system with the machine AND remove the pan to replace the filter...
Two questions:
1)Is this correct??
2)Is there a magnet in the pan to catch metal particles ?

Ok, I hope the dealer is going to pull down the pan and change the filter before or after they flush it out? RIGHT? Leaving a dirty filter in there isn't going to help nothing if the new fluid is going to mix with a crappy filter.

That is exaclty my point... The quick lube places (i just called Jiffy Lube) only flush the system, they DONT change the filter... If you want both done at the same time, you have to do your homework...

I know that these 4.7L trannys, I think they are called the 45FRE or something, AOD, have like 3 filters in there. That's why it is so expensive to have them serviced. The dealer charges you for the set which is naturally more expensive due to the filters so I GUESS I CAN SAY THAT THEY DO CHANGE THE FILTERS when they flush it out. We need a Mopar tech on the site to confirm this.

If your CAPS are a defensive reply to what I wrote earlier... We are making two different points...
You are saying the dealer changes the filters and I don’t disagree... I am saying most of the third-party "Quick Lube" joints ONLY performs a flush of the system- No Filter change.

OffRoadRuss, I wasn't even thinking about your post when I wrote that, I apologize if that's how you took it. no, I was saying that the dealer has to change it but the Jiffy Lube places I know doesn't do that, they just flush it out, leaving a dirty filter in there. doesn't make much sense does it?

Have them do a complete transmission flush and then have them drop the pan and replace any and all filters in there, and if there is a screen, have them thoroughly clean the screen. And make sure that the torque convertor gets done as well

My Jiffy Lube does both. flush and the filter pan drop.
it costs more both, think its $120.
I only paid 80 for the flush alone.
He said they ran 16 qts through my trans to flush out the funk.
My converter is still slippin so it's goin to the stealer.
2000 CC RT 25k and a bad converter already

OUCH - just had my trans service performed at dealer. it's expensive, but a lot of that cost IS in the filters. small price to pay for preventative maint.

Hi guys, I'm new to the list here. I have a '95 Dakota XLT 4x4 that is slowly leaking tranny fluid. I noticed when it started shifting bad this winter. I add a quart and it's fine for a month or so. Two questions:
1) Is this common after 130,000 miles?
2) Do you think a standard Jiffy Lube tranny service will help this, or is it indicitive of a more serious problem.
I just bought this thing last summer nad plan on doing some trailering this year. Wondering if I should wait.

????I had my tranny hi-tech flushed for the second time on my 2000 Dakota C.C.. I have 35k on it. Owner's manual recommends every 12K. the question is for those that have had the service done, did you have any problems with the tranny line fitting being blown out from the radiator. If so, do you know if this is something that is common with the Dakotas? What solutions are recommended besides no more hi tech flushing.

I serviced my trans at 10,000 miles. The 45R.. has two changeable filters. The primary filter is just a simple polyester/felt filter like most modern tranmissions use. The second filter is a screw in filter that looks alot like a small oil filter with built in fitting/stud. It is on the return side comeing back from the cooler. One filter is $16.95 the other is $34.00 @ dealer. The atf+4 is $8.95 per quart sold in 1 gallon jugs at dealer. I put my truck up on ramps and used a kiddie pool to catch all of the fluid. Mine held 7 quarts. I let it drain about 30 minutes. I put five in checked dipstick. I test drove it about 5 miles and checked again. It was low. I put another quart in and drove it again. Still low. I put in a quart number 7 and drove it another 10 miles and checked. Later when I was cleaning up it took a 1 gallon milk jug and a 2 liter pop bottle to hold the tranny fluid. I did not drain the filters so I do not know how much they were holding. I am sure I would not have gotten that much fluid out if I had it on a lift. You can buy Redline Synthetic C+ATF from myoilshop.com for $7.50 per quart. THe C+ATF is specialy made just for Chrysler cars and trucks. I have had in my truck for 2000 miles now and it shifts great even when the temp is well below 0 degrees out. Flushing can help if the tranny has been abused buy not serveing the fluid. If you have always stayed ahead of oxidation then you will not have alot of varnish on the parts. Useing Synthetic fluids will also go along way to prevent varnish from forming. Once varnish forms the only why to truely remove it is to flush the tranny. So if your truck is new the best insurance is to simply change your fluids and filters before they need it and to use a good synthic fluid that meets or exceeds ATF+4 spec.'s. If you do not let varnish form then you will never need to flush it. Seals dry out from varnish build up on them.P.S. Yes their is a magnate in the pan.

Went in for an oil change,I got the oil chantge, but they accidentally confused my Chevy G20 van with the Camaro behind it which needed a flush. I got the flush treatment, At 150K, I had no leaks,no probs, but now, it leaks like a sieve. May shift a little easier though. What now? I am a victim.
