Subject: Fan removed w/o 180 thermo installed
IP: Logged

Message:
I recently did a body lift for my quad. In order to not have to cut the fan shroud I took the fan off like some suggested. The electric kicks on at 210 and stays on for a while then goes off. Will it keep up in the dead of summer. It was only 50 out when it was doing this....210 sounded high to me too....

Thanks

210 is too high. either put the fan back on or get
an electric one. put in a 180 t-stat will help but
your still gonna want a fan to keep your engine
cool.

It has an electric fan already. It's the factory fan. It had both the electric and the clutch fan. Actaully, I had to take the needles off for the white face gauge install last year. Maybe it's not a TRUE 210. The fan is going on and off correctly.

I took mine of my 01 QC 4.7 and it still has stock t-stat and temps run to high I think it hurts it more than it helps running it to hot.

The factory e-fan is programmed to turn on at 210 degrees. You can't run it alone unless you remove it from the factory harness and add an aftermarket thermostat kit to engage it at a lower temp. Hayden or Permacool make thermo kits if you are so inclined.

After a search - Others on this forum are are doing it. Some left it the way it is at 210. Not sure I want to do that though. I like the idea of trying a selective thermo switch. I'll keep the fan handy for the first summer maybe...8-)

Just for note the KJ (Liberty) is running this same setup with no clutch fan. My wife has one. My understanding is that motor is our 4.7L with two cylinders knocked off...uses the same pump/pulley too.

2000 and up all came with two fans the electric
was kicks on at 210 and also when the a/c is on.
and even with a 180 t-stat you shouldn't run it
without a fan on at all times. you can pick up all
you need for an electric fan set up for around
$150-$200. its worth it jsut to put up the cash
and keep it cooler. it'll help out the truck in
the long run.

graphiteRT, I used a flex-a-lite thermostatic switch(31147). Just took power from PDC and spliced into fan wire(green),works great. Only problem I had was a bad fuse holder.(30 amp in line fuse recomended). PCM still controls fan as a back-up.

Well I am In AZ and my stock electric fan will run all the time because my AC will be on all the time so with a 180 T-stat I should be fine.

jeremiah2360,

Where did you buy the flex-a-lite thermostatic switch(31147)? I think that's what i might do for a while if it's not too expensive.

Greg,

You sure about that?

gps-If it's a 4.7, with the alloy heads, etc. the 4.7 is alot easier to keep cool. MIne has no problem, in South Texas, with the 180tstat, and no other fan mods and not using the belt clutch/fan. It NEVER even gets to half way on the gauge.

TexasTodd,

Thanks. It's a 4.7. I still think that the thermo switch would be a good thing. Keeping cool can only help.
