Subject: Cat Removal Questions IP: Logged
Message: Ok yall,
I have a couple questions. I live in Fargo, ND. We do not have emissions testing, nor will we, most likely ever.
I found someone who will take off my Cat, so I've got a couple questions.
A) If for some stupid reason I get caught without it, do I just get issued a fix-it ticket, or are there possible legal repercussions?
B) The guy doing it can only do a clamp-job...no welding. If he does a good job, will I see similar gains as compared to welding a piece of pipe in place?
I have a 99 5.2 with stock exhaust manifolds and a single 3" out with no muffler. Should I put a muffler on before I have him cut it off?
Let me know your opinions, and if anyone has had any real experience with this! What kind of gains can I expect? Thanks again!

Message: No muffler? so what are you going to be running straight pipes? prob lose all your backpressure.

Message: Just through a glass pack on there in place of the cat.
I did that with my Ram, no problems and a bit more snappier...

Message: I gutted the cats on my '87 Vette and lost a lot of power and eventually the engine started burning massive amounts of oil. I think this was mostly due to the decrease in backpressure. I would recommend simply using a high flow cat and performance muffler for a street engine - Better performance, smoother power band, more reliable, and legal.

Message: Rather then making a new post I'm just gonna put my question on here. I want to replace my old cat and I want to do it myself instead of paying someone to do it. When you replace it, do you just replace the cat itself, or do the pipes on each end come with buying a new one. I was looking at carsound, but if there are other better or cheaper brands out there, then that would be great too. Pardon my ignorance on the subject, and make fun of me if you want just as long as you have an answer. Thanks.
